I know I know... 5150, JCM800, Dual Rectifier....

BUT

Are there any sleepers out there? Any amps that are overlooked that are great for metal (chuggy stuff)?

Shane may chime in, but from what I've heard of it the HD147 is insane. Definitely rivaled the 6505+ in the studio. (HD147+ into Vetta 4X12 cab vs. 6505+ into Mesa Oversized 4X12). The guitars were comparable in the studio, all ESP LTD's, all same series', all same pickups. Our band is a bunch of ESP/EMG freaks.

Yeah, I am loving my HD147, although getting it to sound amazing is really a function of how well you can dial it, more so than other amps since it's so versatile.

If you've gotta have tubes, then I'd say the Framus Dragon is amazing (and expensive!) If you want something affordable but killer, I can't say enough great things about the Peavey Triple XXX (the one with the mudflap girls on it.) Total rockage, excels at tight, brutal distortion.

My advice is.. if it ain't broke don't fix it. So basically, if you can't get some great metal tones out of a 5150, a Triple Rec, a JCM 800 or a combo of all three, it ain't the amp's fault! I like to stick with the proven players, they deliver each and every time.

I have the framus cobra, and I'm realy happy with this amp, how is the difference obout cobra and the dragon?

B52 AT100. A sleeper for $700 new. You need a pedal in front though, for more gain.

Is the AT series a lot better sounding than the ST? Because I played an ST100A head through it's matching cab and it was the worst sounding amp I'd ever played through in my life, my old Peavey 15w practice amp sounded better.

I once tested the dragon and I must say that it didn´t have enough gain for my purposes. I think the cobra is more metal than the dragon (at least it looks more metal :heh: )

Another good amp is the Laney VH 100R and it is cheap.
I bought mine used on ebay for 555 euro!

Yeah, I don't know about any other B52 products, but this amp is the real deal! Real close to a dual rec!

I think the Krank Rev 1 combo and 1/2 stack get over looked due to the Krankenstien. I honestly think the Rev 1 is one of the very best metal amps I have ever heard. Even the clean channel is amazingly clean. It sounds like a fender Twin just a bit darker like a bassman 10 or something. It's perfect for me.
But Honestly the 5150/6505 is terribly hard to beat. For just metal tone, there is not many amps anywhere near that price range that can better it. the krank cost more and gives you more. the Peavey cost less and almost gives your the same amount except a good clean channel.
