Hey guys,

I'm after a piano VSTi or sample bank. Ideally something more convincing sounding than Pianoteq. It's something I never paid a lot of attention to, thinking I'd just use Pianoteq when the time came, but it definitely does sound a bit too fake.

Cheers.

EastWwest Pianos seems the best, but it's not cheap and its something like 230 gb. There is special deal going on till june 30 though ( buy one get one free), so if you were interested in something liek symphonic orchestra I think it's a great deal.

The absolute best is VSL's new Imperial grand - 100 velocity layers per note (!). It's the closest thing to playing a real piano. It's also the first library with sympathetic resonance samples. Unfortunately you only get a Bosendorfer with this library, but it sounds incredible.

Next is EWQL's piano library, which has some issues with sampling - there's a lot of strange sub-bass (HVAC system/passing truck?) on some pp notes in the middle of the keyboard in the Steinway lib. That's probably not a huge problem to most people, but it drives me nuts. This library is a better value compared to VSL - you get Steinway, Bosendorfer, Bechstein, and Yamaha samples....and it's quite a lot cheaper than VSL.

Synthology Ivory is another option, but I'm not too crazy about the sound. It seems like they nuked the samples with noise reduction.

You mentioned that you're looking for something similar to Pianoteq, but better - well, unfortunately samples are the only way to go, which are not lightweight and not cheap like a softsynth. Also, in order to get the most out of any piano VSTi, it HAS to be played by a human. You just can't program convincing piano, IMHO. Anyway, just take that into consideration before you drop a ton of money on something and wonder why it sounds so mechanical...unless that's what you're going for.

Cool, thanks guys. I might just battle it out with Pianoteq, as the bands right now aren't really piano-centric or anything. They're just additional layers that should sit in the mix fine.

Maybe down the track an investment into a huge sample library will be warranted.

I dont know.. i have never really been too fond of any piano plugin out there.

I did find this a few weeks ago:

Sounds great to me!

Erms, google for "EVM Grand Piano" it may give you some links where it isn't available but eventually you'll find the good one.

If not PM with your email I'll send it to you. its free, small, and to my ears with a good reverb sounds great.

Pianoteq = Tweak = A amazing sound

Its the same thing like the impulses . Check Final! v2 of GuitarHack ( Mesa 4x12 )
the secret in Pianoteq is the equualization and the velocity and the hammers . The part most important in a piano are the HAMMERS check .
And if you can wait for PianoTeq 4

25th August 2006 = Pianoteq 1
26th March 2007 = PianoTeq 2
23rd February 2009 = Pianoteq 3
