Hmm I didn't think the woofer counted in the '7' figure. What does the .1 stand for then?

In my old 4.1 setup, the 4 reffered to the front left & right and the rear left & right and the .1 to the woofer.

At the moment I've gone to a simple '2' setup. Basically, a stereo pair of studio monitors. They are perfect for all my intentions.

That's 6.1 you're describing. 7.1 has two rear surrounds in addition to the 2 regular surrounds, so you have a total of 4 surround speakers.
