Where the hell did Gotthard come from? I found their new disc & bought it.Its good... WOW!! So now I'm tracking down older stuff. They came around right around the time grunge destroyed the public perception of this type of music.
Any opinions on this band?

I must have ignored the posts because of unfamiliarity. I figured, being around since 1992, if I haven't heard 'em yet, they must suck. How wrong I was.

the first three albums are essential:

s/t
Dial Hard
G

The live CD/DVD "Live in Switzerland" is amazing

The newer ones like Domino Effect are also very recommended.

I don't like them what so ever. However, I know a lot of progpower fans do for some reason, and I especially know Glenn likes them. This is why they're my pick for oddball.

Even though it came out in 2009 "Need to Believe" will probably make my personal Top 10 of 2010 list next January. I didn't pick it up until January of this year and it's been in constant rotation since I got it (along with both Avantasias). Great disc.

They came from Switzerland...20 years ago!

God, I love this band. Not remotely metal, but great fun, great energy, great songs.

Hands down my favorite band that I've never seen live before. I'd give ANYTHING for Glenn to have them be the band he signs just because he wants to see them. Great band, great albums and one of the best singers on the planet!

The singer is what was the key to my liking them. There are many bands that sound similiar until the vocalist opens his mouth. That moment either sells it or ruins it.
Gotthards singer sold it. The new disc is my favorite so far, followed by Human Zoo. The others will be here soon.

Its amazing how a few songs sold an entire discography.

Sort of. I mean they're all very competent musicians but I just don't see what the big deal is.

If you grew up when Bon Jovi was huge you'd get it.

EDIT: OK, that sounded condescending, which was not my intent. I just think a big part of Gotthard's appeal is that they're so similar to the rock bands we used to love. They have approximately nothing to do with progressive or power metal (or metal at all for that matter).

Actually that makes a lot of sense. If there's a time and place for a sound, and you weren't 'there' for it, then it'll never quite click with you.

And I'll leave the tfread with a reasonably satisfactory answer. :)

I wouldn't quite say they have nothing in common with power metal. A big part of both power metal and hard rock is strong melodies and catchy choruses. Plus most power metal bands have songs that could have easily been considered power ballads. I've always considered power metal to just be the next step up from hard rock.

I really have to disagree with this statement. I wasn't around for any of the music of the 60's or most of the 70's but I still love lots of music from those time periods. Good music is good music no matter when it came out.
