Excellent choice. I used to listen to Lycia - Cold when going to sleep before I was married. I don't know that they would completely qualify as ambient, but it's an amazing album.

somewhere between post-rock and coldwave ambient with soft jazzy undertones, a bit akin to Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden in that respect. I love this album, it's the perfect definition of a nightly urban dreamscape, best enjoyed with half-numbed senses at 4'00 am or something. If you want samples I'll oblige later.

They have another album, Codename: Dustsucker, not nearly as great but still very cool.

God Is An Astronaut are amazing although post rock and not ambient (at least the one i've heard - "All Is Violent, All Is Bright"). On topic: It's all about 70s material for me...Klaus Schulze, some Popol Vuh, Tangerine Dream, but i bet you heard of all these. Don't know how much "ambient" they can be considered, compared to what is called like that today. This one hear is one of my favourite and most over-played "ambient" albums:

What/how do I tell the difference?
