GREAT ambient music

I was just reiterating the fact that it was a good recommendation. Get off your fucking ivory tower.

I'll second Procer Veneficus (Ghostvoices anyway) and Desiderii Marginis(That Which is Tragic and Timeless especially). Although, admittedly, I'm not entirely sure what ambient is. Is Morte Macabre's Symphonic Holocaust ambient? How about the Silent Hill soundtracks? Or Blut Aus Nord's Thematic Emanation of Archetypal Multiplicity?

How about the Silent Hill soundtracks?

I wouldn't call it ambient but it's a good mention either way. I'm not too fond of the soundtrack set pieces just because they work better in the game -- that said, the actual 'songs' are fantastic. The theme to Silent Hill is one of my favorite pieces of music ever, right down to the minimalistic scratches on the vinyl.

Not necessarily ambient, but last few nights I've been going to sleep listening to Burzum's Hliðskjálf.

I haven't heard of many of the bands listed in this thread. I suppose I should. I want some dark ambient music for the evenings, particularly to accompany Weiland or Kvelldsanger.

Oh I hadn't realized this thread would be dealing with dark ambient soon enough. I agree with most recommendations made above. Desiderii Marginis' serene paintings in shadowstrokes are an obvious contender for most beautiful Cold Meat music ever.

Still my all-time favourite ambient album is Predella Avant - Carbon Figures

The music on this has a dark and foreboding quality seldom found in the genre, while escaping the Cold Meat-like automatisms. It is well-crafted, fairly produced, teeming with killer collages, unsettling background rattles, wails and clangs, and great, unobtrusive keyboard work, with a couple overwhelming orchestral outbursts. Also there's a "Seventh Seal" sample (= complete ruleage) and charred corpses in the booklet. What more would you ask for? This album is totally :worship: IMO

Ah, yes, samples... Here you go then...

After a few listens on each, it tends to grow on you. Not bad. For me, ambient music should be a little more laid back, perhaps even calming. This is more like a movie soundtrack to some gladiator film or something. [or at least, it's quite militaristic]

I like it though. The orchestral arrangements are good.

obligatory "music for airports" reco post
This. And "The Plateaux of Mirror". And "On Land". And "Apollo". And "The Pearl". Brian Eno's ambient material is pretty much required listening if you want to know where the genre came from or if you just want some really great ambient music. Some of the earliest ambient recorded, and still some of the best. If you only pick one, it should be "Music for Airports" or "On Land". "Music for Airports" is more soothing. "On Land" has more variety.
