my wife's car wouldn't start at the BMV the other day I had to leave work (good), and buy a new battery at auto zone. but that ended up being good because I would rather replace a battery in good weather than in the middle of january.

cars can really suck

It's looking like it might be the alternator, but that's screwed up cause I just got a new one in September.

I just searched for my 83 grand marquis and the alternator is $62, plus $10 off that for the old one (core value)

they'll nail you w/ labor for an alternator, even a rebuilt one.

i've had nightmares w/ alternators and rebuilt alternators. labor is the killer.

cerpintaxt, one thing: is this a honda?

right. because i was going to say, if it was, it could be due to a chip 'neath the dashboard, rather than the actual alternator. but hell, trust your mechanic, i don't know.

I tried to do my own alternator once. I could do all the stupid work, I just couldn't torque the alternator into position well enough to keep the belt real tight.

I see, yep alternator, went in a threw a fit at the place I bought it and they gave me a new one. My car techy neighbor put it in for a case of brewskies. Starts up fine now. God's off my shit list.
