Guess the guitar sound!

How would it sound through this one

Most probably a 1000 times better, but still not good enough.

Just had a listen at some clips recorded through the Mesa recto recording pre.

Dunno what's the general opinion on that one, but for me it had that hf-distortion that you won't find in the plugins.

I guess its just like the digital eq's, for a good HFresponse it needs to do some tricks -like upsampling- to make it sound 'analog'. a Tube has a very wide HFrespons, great sounding distortion and gradual compression, not easy to replicate. PodXT comes close but also sounds harsh..

Guess we have to wait for a plugin that can render a track on a 'HiQuality'setting eating a lot of resources. All the Higainstuff so far is pretty useless, the amplitube2 clips also sound like somethings wrong with your cabinet..

Gonna try to put two ampfarms in series, haven't tried that one yet. Maybe that'll get me a bit closer.. I also made some impulses with the QClone of cabinets, it helps, but still that grainy 'digital' MF/HFstuff..

And the Mesa costs at the moment a bit too much.. :Smug:

The Krank logo is in the dicitonary next to the defintion: "what I'm skeptical about"

I like the sound of the Krankenstein in particular, not as nuts about the Revolution, although I can see why people like it. I think they are a promising newcomer, and once all the initial hype wears off I bet they'll start getting real about quality control and reliability.

The way their pedal is marketed is rather silly, but if it sounds half as good as their amps it's worth the $150.

My dream, though, would be to get past tube amps entirely, and have a great sounding guitar plugin. Guitar Rig shows the most promise, but they still have a long way to go on the high-gain front. Somebody who knows a great deal about best-of-breed high gain tube tone (hint, ANDY) should get paid by Native Instruments to consult and help perfect that aspect of the software.

PS - soon I'll be posting some clips of my 6505+ head into my (soon to arrive) THD Hotplate into my MOTU 828 Mk II interface + differnt plugin speaker simulation combinations (Guitar Rig, convolution impressions, etc.) This might be a killer solution for late-night reamping in the condo complex. Stay tuned!

If I wanted to make an impulse response of my cab and use it with some sort of convolution plugin or program, how would I go about doing so? That clip actually sounded phenomenally good for what it was, and I like Kazrog's idea of running the amp into a load for silent recording. If I can capture my cab in the computer, I might never need to make noise again! :p

Mmmm, hearing what Andy gets from a Revolution or a Krankestein, I don't think there is room for skepticism anymore... One would say he could get the same sound from a Marshall practice amp, maybe... but still, the Krank stuff sounds pretty awesome, especially the Krankenstein (it's not better than a 5150, Rectifier, Powerball or whatever, it's only a matter of taste... but it's a good blend between a Marshall and a 5150).

Oh, and making impulses responses is a pain in the arse...

Hey Storyteller!
Could you post the Impulse Response? At the moment i'm experimenting with my podxt and Boogex (from Voxengo). And I am looking for some good responses...

Thanx Storyteller....nice responses

I am curious about making resonses. With this little thinks you can emulate everything....cabs...preamps...romms etc...But i don't know how to use preamp responses. For cab impulses I use Boogex or Guitar Rig.

If someone can give some tips about making impulses....let us know!!!

Then I would make some on my own...I have access to an 5150, an Engl savage 120,an Engl Cab with V30s and a marshall Cab with V30s. It would be the ultimate solution for my "homestudio". I have this stuff in our rehearsal room and this monsters are way too loud for recording at home. Perhaps when we have a clue in making Impulses,we could exchange them in a seperate thread...

The thing about speakers is that they have a non-linear response; i.e., they behave differently at different levels. Convo impulses are linear and have a fairly static response. Running a sweep at a high enough level through a cab will give you a pretty accurate tonal impression, and the results are much better than the emulated cabs you'll hear in modelers and VSTs, but until there's some sort of "dynamic convolution" plugin, they'll still miss the mark a little.
Interestingly enough, Waves' IR-1 program has a sort-of non-linear approach to impulses, but it's very a rudimentary behavior and mainly applies to reverbs; deviating too far from the characteristics of the original impulse will begin to produce artifacts not entirely unlike timestretching an audio file a bit too much.
And you can't really capture an impulse from an amp like a 5150 if you plan on getting any sort of distortion out of it. Distortion is the ultimate non-linearity. There are preamp impulses out there for Neve, Manley, and Teletronix pres, but all they really do is add the tonal characteristics to your sound; the behavior of things like gain and overdrive can't be accurately replicated. Yet.

okay....thanx so far...

I have found some articles about making responses.I will try this out with some cabs and mics...perhaps something nice nice will come out
