Guitar Bus Uses?

I'm trying to get creative lately with my guitar bus and try new things out. So far nothing sounds good outside of EQ(HP/LP Small cuts) Saturation, and "Maybe" C4.

I don't feel like my Gtr's are lacking I'm just wondering you guys do anything else besides EQ and Saturation and/or Limiting/ multiband?

I keep my guitar bus simple. Most of the time there's no FX at all on the bus itself and I'm only using it as a volume fader to make things a little easier and organized. I do my HP/LP and EQ tweaking on individual tracks for the stereo width. Maybe slight comp, EQ, saturation on the bus.

Only if the source is bad, otherwise what you said, at the most.
Creative doesn't always sound the best.
The biggest lesson I have learned in the studio is less is more.
If you don't feel like your guitar sound needs improving, leave it alone!

Jeff, Crill do you guys actually compress with it or just for it does to the guitars?

No compression for me. Maybe if i do some rock i can peel off like 1-2db's but usually no. I use dual mono and have the compressor switch on instead of limiter. I feel the compression knob is more musical and dynamic to my ears.

Mine are usually either kissing it (2-3db) or crushing it (8-10db) on the GR front, depends on what I'm looking to get out of it. Crushing the guitar bus (or running it in parallel) like that can add a ton of punch and swing to the guitars but it can also make them sound jumpy and weird.

Comp switch, not limiter, and I play with that little knob at the bottom that affects how much the comp responds to low end.

Nice to hear that you guys like CLA3A on Gbus too. I found that out by accident in my honeymoon phase with the CLA comps. I never liked any other compressor on that bus before, but this one does something nice.

I usually keep my Gbus as clean as it can be. VCC is always on it (I like it on Neve, but watch that mud). Saturation is almost always there in some form or another. CLA3A either works or it doesn't, so I always try it briefly. And then there in an automated EQ that makes space for whatever instrument is leading; usually the vocal. That's about it I think.

I usually put a multiband compressor on and bypass all the bands except between like 120-250ish and have that duck a db or 2. Or sometimes a limiter with like 2-3db reduction. OR BOTH!!!!

don't hate. I still like Waves L1 doing next to nothing. Also Like the C4 on low mids only. Dependant on material of course. Sometimes nothing on bus, Maybe vcc or saturation of some type. Not sure Im liking more compression on top of a fairly distorted guitar in most cases lately, but I am definitely going to try experimenting some more with it. For "cleans" I use quite a bit of compression on the bus usually and again saturation, vcc, tape, etc.

I often run a parallel bus from my guitarbus where I totally distort or clip the bus and bring it back in underneath the main guitarbus. I often filter that parallel bus too depending on how it sounds.

It won't work for fast guitar stuff, but for rockish or slower metal stuff it creates a very nice texture and "energy".

Ha ha ha, what is this, 2003?

Joking dude.

I normally go VTM (bias high) --> VCC (Neve) --> ReaEQ (HP and LP filter) and have been experimenting with ReaEQ high shelf boost into FG-Mu, with mostly poor results.

However, reading this, I'm going to try doing all the EQ independently on the guitar tracks and experiment with some parallel compression on the buss.

I was waiting for that. Lol

But for some reason I just like how it brings the guitars forward, I literally insert the plugin and don't do any reduction at all, just makes the guitars pop out of mix a bit. Also use Waves S1 sometimes for width. Obviously mix dependent, most times nothing on bus for me.

I like how the bias switch on VTM helps to shift the focus of a track/bus into a certain direction. Sometimes it's just the ticket to make something go *click*. I'm not sure, but I think I've gone for high bias on guitar bus a few times too.

I usually add some reverb cause I personally think it makes the guitars more full sounding, but I know a lot of people don't really add reverb to rhythm guitars.
