i was browsing will kriski's guitar site and found this clip of him using guitar hero for his sampled riffs.

he explains on his website...
I wrote some java code using some java api’s, plugged the guitar controller into the computer via usb and used the controller to trigger mp3 riffs. I recorded the riffs individually using Cubase and also made a backing track.

and this was from youtube comment...
instead of guitar hero where you push buttons in sync with the music, my idea was to have a library of riffs/licks for each button or button combination so you could improvise without having to be a technical player. You could combine the riffs and create your own solos over backing tracks like metal, blues, etc.

pretty clever i thought - that'd be cool if these kind of apps were written into the game instead of having to hack in. i remember back in the day nintendo had some midi writing progs and people were doing silly stuff with their gameboys but this takes it to the next level!

Great find, Sara. Over a year ago, there were some other guys who hacked Guitar Hero controllers to play MIDI-based riffs.
