It really was standard E. Egan plays a 5 string bass, so that can add some low-end. The new material is in E-flat so far.Dead_Daylight said:

More bands need to start tuning to standard E dammit. I look at it this way, ...And Justice For All is to me the greatest album in history, and if standard E is good enough for that collection of songs to be crushingly heavy, then it's good enough for me.
(of course the killer tone helps out too)
