I finally gave up on ProTools. I've had nothing but problems with PTLE 8.04... I mean, I've always had PT problems (Structure cutting off the ends of samples and my EastWest libraries not working with any other plug-ins), but the 8.04 issues have been unbearable (random recorded fizziness on track that you don't notice until playback.) Both Avid tech support and the DUC have been useless as usual. No way was I sending the more $$$ to upgrade to PT9... they haven't shown me anything in a long time.
After spending a few days with a new Focusrite interface and Reaper (and the Reaper forum), I've actually become excited again about writing/recording. The workflow is much more tailored to what I need, the MIDI tools are better, it's hella faster loading stuff and what isn't there can usually be added with a little scripting. The Reaper forum is a creative/helpful environment, much like this board.
I'll keep PT around for compatibility, but Reaper is hella sweet. That is all.
