Hammers of Misfortune...anyone? PPUSA MATERIAL...!!!

I guess I'm new here, but I wouldn't think a bunch of metal fans would like certain things because they're "socially acceptable"... XD

How many examples do you want?????

Let's take a recent one......

GHOST is probably the most obvious here.......

I can play you all a lot of 70's influenced doom bands that many here would not give the time of day to. Add in the outfits, cover art, push from Metal Blade / Rise Above, praise by Pitchfork, endorsement of everyone from James Hetfield to Eddie Trunk, and BAM!!!!

GHOST ARE SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE......

If I made a thread where I posted PENTAGRAM, ELECTRIC WIZARD, early MANILLA ROAD, CATHEDRAL, etc, etc... many here would reply about how irrelevant doom metal is, and how unoriginal it is since it is so "retro" since it is 70's influenced.

I am not calling any specific person out on this BTW, just stating an overall observation as I see GHOST being praised by many who are not fans at all of what they are doing musically. Hence, they have become simply socially acceptable..........

Anyone else?

If MANILLA ROAD got signed to METAL BLADE or NUC BLAST (Which they won't due to their non-touring status), you would see VERY similar posts to this one.....

Hammers Of Misfortune doesn't tour either. Also signing to Metal Blade isn't really that big of a deal anymore since it's pretty much well known that that label preys on "smaller" bands and eats their publishing, merch, etc while putting little to no money into the acts so they can afford to license records from big acts like Behemoth and Between The Buried and Me.

Oh and lol at Ghost getting "praise" from Pitchfork. Pitchfork hasn't ever written a single word on Ghost. The idea that Ghost is a "hipster" band is something made up from angry IMNs who "don't get" them and need to scapegoat a group of people just to justify your own taste. Also for the record, Glenn doesn't even like Ghost, yet they're hot with alot of posters on here. I know logic never was your strong point, but yeah, you may want to re-think your arguments. We like them because they write short, well written, insanely catchy songs. That's it. There's no conspiracy, so sorry to burst your IMN bubble.

Oh and one more thing, I always found it hilarious you go on about how you're some kind of a doom expert (which to me, is like being an expert at Magic The Gathering - actually no, those people interact with other people irl so yeah, doom metal expertise is even lower common denominator), but your only examples of doom bands are these cheesy, geeky Black Sabbath wannabe acts like Manilla Road and whatever Lovecraftian hogwash St. Vitus cover band number 9,001 wants to name itself, but you fail to jock bands like Amorphis, Katatonia, Swallow The Sun, Slumber, Rapture, etc or even shit like Hooded Menance and YOB. You know, bands that actually do something interesting and innovative with their sound and don't recycle the same riffs for 20 years.

Well, Pitchfork or not, you get the point.
Or, you are being overtly stubborn and are avoiding the point.

It's the same exact issue many people had here a couple years ago with DragonForce.

Guitar Hero, MTV, Ozzfest, etc made them "socially acceptable" to the masses, to the dismay of many longtime fans.

The point is simply that there are a lot of great underground bands of all genres. Sometimes though it is difficult when countless bands start to get praises around here which have been brought up by a select few, only after that band seems to get more accepted by the masses.

but you fail to jock bands like Amorphis, Katatonia, Swallow The Sun

WHAT??????
Maybe because those aren't doom bands...
Those are dark metal bands that have VERY slight doom influences......

Furthermore, doom is FAR from the only genre I am into.

Also, Manilla Road are not doom, nor did I ever say they were.
I was just using them as an example of a band that many (and as I said not pointing out people HERE specifically, so the only one who is MAD here is you), would never give a chance.......

I just like Ghost because a friend introduced me to them. >_> I must be completely out of this loop.

Funny you should mention Dragonforce, because that's the first real metal show I ever went to. It pretty much inspired me to join them, someday, so I owe a lot to Dragonforce.

(They actually played a good show that night. HURHUR)

That's cool.
There is NOTHING wrong with a band getting new fans because they have gotten increased exposure. In your case, it sounds like you simply heard them and liked them. Awesome......

It's music. It's entertainment.

The only thing I have a problem with are metalheads who ONLY will consider a band that has passed the "socially acceptable" phase.........

Don't believe me????
I bet there are hundreds of OPETH fans out there who wouldn't give MY DYING BRIDE or NOVEMBERS DOOM the time of day......

Just like there are hundreds of QR and DREAM THEATER fans who would never give FATES WARNING the time of day, or DRAGONFORCE fans who would never give SONATA or NIGHTWISH the time of day........

Ok, I am done......

Completely irrelevant, missing the point completely, response from AEONIC to come very shortly....

Okay I'm not going to lie, I've watched friends actually play Magic The Gathering before (only for about 5 minutes, over 15 years ago, couldn't really follow what was going on - went back to playing Street Fighter with bros shortly after) and I can safely say that is the most dorky thing I've ever read in my entire life. Holy shit.

Best part of the thread so far! :heh:

Actually that's the thing I get the least about this entire thread. JGolden was crying about Hammers because he thinks everyone jocks bands only when you do, but have you even said anything about HoF in the entire history of this forum? I could be wrong but I don't remember it. Are you even into them? haha

..because that's so much cooler than Magic the Gathering? XD

I'm sorry, I went to art school. The guys who did Magic and the guys who played Street Fighter were the same guys. We're on a metal forum. Most of us are nerds, and nerds who won't admit that they're nerds.

Are you kidding? Back in the day the only people that played Street Fighter were solid bros. This was when there were things called arcades and you actually had to step outside and go somewhere! Though, I never said I was any good at SF  it was just less confusing than MTG.

I've said it many times, there's nothing wrong with being a nerd, but there are tiers of nerd-dom just like there are tiers of being fat fat. To paraphrase Gabriel Iglesias, Jasonic would probably fall into a "DAAAYUUUM" on the nerd-scale based on that post alone.

What the hell are you talking about?
Once again, completely irrelevant.....

You are trying to imply that you know about doom because you think more well known bands like Amorphis and Katatonia are doom, which they are not.

Never said a word about them to my recollection. Somehow, they still got signed to MB anyway! WTF? How dare a band become successful without my blessing....

I own August Engine & Locust Years and enjoyed them quite a bit. They lost me with Broken Glass and I didn't bother to check out the follow-up. I do have the new one on my radar though to check out.

That pattern can be said about a lot of bands for me so HoM shouldn't feel special in that regards.

What's that one Metallica hit from back when I was in High School???

Oh yea!!! SAD BUT TRUE!!! :heh:

All kidding aside, HOM are one of the MANY bands many of us have been talking about for years but would never been given any consideration until they got signed to METAL BLADE, making them socially acceptable.

Though still cool that them signing has given them more exposure.

The reason for the eye-roll though is they have been brought up MANY times on here with very little response from most.

If MANILLA ROAD got signed to METAL BLADE or NUC BLAST (Which they won't due to their non-touring status), you would see VERY similar posts to this one.....

I hate this argument so fucking much! The only time in my life I have ever been influenced by other people for the music I enjoy was in the beginning when my Uncle introduced me to Black Sabbath, Rush, etc. I took it and ran from there. I don't like being lumped into a category...just because I happen to like something that someone has deemed to be hot with the hipster crowd doesn't mean I am a follower. I like what I like and I dislike what I dislike. Music has been and always will be a personal thing. This whole high and mighty preaching from the metal pulpit is really tiresome.

And btw..keep the discussion on music please.

Take the dork stuff to the Lounge.

Word! :)

Look, obviously bands sign because they want to get more exposure.
What band wouldn't?

It sounds like the original poster discovered HOM and dug them.
Totally cool!

Just sometimes difficult when bands you pimp for years are written off as irrelevant UNTIL they get signed. I am not saying that is the case with Hammers, though they have definitely been mentioned here on more than one occasion. :)
