Hand Excersizers?

Ten years ago I had some serious accident, I broke my shoulder in three pieces, my elbow and my wrist, some ribs, etc. A year after of medical treatment and slow recovery, my hand/arm turned very week and this device ( I have a gripmaster ) helped me a lot to recover strength in my hand. Keep in mind that I worked with a physical therapist and my piano teacher that also had experience in rehab.

The correct way of use this device is previously warmth your hand with some exercises, rubbing it etc , then press the grip with any finger, keep pressing for some seconds, then release and REST that finger a least 3 times the time you pressed to avoid tendinitis of other damage (while you can press with another finger). You can develop a lot of strength with this device, BUT never overuse it, and avoid it if you feel any pain. Your hand must be healthy to use it. With time and practice you can keep doing exercise for more time.

Some years ago I started to play guitar and I used this device to gain some strength in my left hand and it worked again; but using that constant but slow exercises and ALWAYS resting.

That's exactly one of the things they should prevent.

I use powerball too, try to remember to spin it at least 5mins/a hand per day.

Yep, no pain no gain :Smug:

Yeah, that's mainly what I was thinking (Kev, that's hardcore by the way, I yield :D), but I dunno, I would think even for the left hand strengthening the forearm would be useful

If you look at the website, the body builders get really hi scores - 14-15k. World record is 16k :goggly: I consider my wrists to be pretty weak to be honest, so it is very helpful. Did you order one dude?

Sorry to go O/T for a little bit but I'm actually trying to work out whether I might've fractured my scaphoid. I fell about 4 feet plus my height (6 feet) onto my right hand about 3 days ago and initially just thought I'd done a jar/sprain, but over the weekend the rest of my wrist got quite a lot better and I'm just left with some localised pain around the area which I'm fairly sure the scaphoid is (pretty much down under my thumb).
Now the stupid thing is that I can do most things quite fine right now (mouse/keyboard are fine, lifting things as long as I don't curl my wrist around) but the things that hurt are twisting motions like turning taps on and off. Reading your post makes me think that it's just not sore enough to be an actual fracture though (I've fractured me radius on my other wrist so I have a rough idea of what it feels like, I guess).

Any insight would be great.

CHECK IT OUT.

I went for 11 days with a broken scaphoid bone.. the day i decided to go to the doctors was when i was lifting a heavy box at my work, and it hurt like hell just below my thumb.. then i lost the feeling in my thumb, which i still haven't recovered entirely.

Some people go for MONTHS with broken scaphoid bones.. and if you do that, you might get traumatic arthritis, which basically means that the blood-supply to the other bones in your wrists is cut of, and that they all will die.

Seriously, if you even suspect that you have a scaphoid fracture, check it out.. it might not hurt at all, but you may seriously loose your entire wrist if you dont get treatment.

A quick check you can do:

Press in that spot(Not to rough..), and see if it hurts(Doesnt have to hurt that bad.. any pain at all is a bad sign.).
Even if it doesnt hurt, your scaphoid bone might be broken.. in my case it didnt hurt when the doctor did that test on me, because my bone was still aligned.

I hope for your sake that you dont have a broken Scaphoid bone.. because you will be in a cast for at the very least 2 months.. :erk:

Yup, it's in the mail!

I used to have one of those grip things. I wonder where it is now...

Anyways, back when my drummer took a couple of lessons with Sean Reinert I remember him asking him about using weights to get good at fast double bass etc.
He advised against it. Claiming it could hamper his control and that the only way to get good at fast double bass is to simply *gasp* practice it.
It makes perfect sense to me. There are rarely shortcuts or gimmicks that will improve your playing better than actually playing the way you intend to play.
Now if only I could get my ass in gear and practice myself...

Thanks a lot for that post Notuern. Really helpful for me. It's hard to tell if it's sore in that spot (I'm leaning towards not overly) because I managed to graze that spot too, so I have a bit of a scab right there. The spot that is still quite sore is this:

I think I will try and get into the doctors just to get it checked out though, since I have definitely read a lot of into about how you can not notice in and then end up with arthritis as you said. Thanks again!

Hahaha, well, you should be! >;D

Naah, but after having to in a cast for 2 months straight you get kind of scared of having to do it again! ;)
And as i said, it didnt hurt more then a sprain or something.

Whoops, forgot to copy that file into my public folder. MSPaint GIF is now there for your perusal if you're interested.

It hurt there the most for me too!
Had the most epic bruise right there.. brown with a very bright purple in the middle.. according to my doctor it was because the radial artery branches of around your thumb, and you tend to damage that "branch" when you break your scaphoid bone.
BUT that being said, you can damage that artery without hurting any bones at all, so dont be to scared about it. it might as well just be a internal bruising, i still think you should go to your doctor though.
