something that bugs me greatly...

these are all great points of advice..

Here's a REALLLY easy way..welll..easy to get, lots of hard work.
1. Get a good quality metronome
2.Head to Stetina.com...buy "Speed Mechanics for Lead guitar" by Troy stetina. this is the best book PERIOD on developing left hand speed and right hand picking. It breaks it all down, starts with one string, then goes from there. It also goes into sweep picking later in the book
3.practice like a mutha!!!

And oh yeah..learn your scales..and never let speed and technical skill rule over what fits...play what sounds good..not what will show off your skills!

Forgetr all this "ADVICE" crap. Just fake it. Here's how. Find an audience. Look at them all like you are the greatest guitar player in the world.

First. Just start off with a real high note. Let's say, around fret 16 or so on your high E string. Do the bendy thing and hold it for an unnatural amount of time. You'll have to close your eyes, throw back your head, and let your mouth hang open. Act like you're talking to someone too.

After about 10 minutes, let your left hand slide all the way back to the first fret and doublepick real fast. If you can, slap a nice artifical harmonic on the end and let THAT note go on as well. You'll have to drop to your knees and use your whammy bar. You may want to roll back until you are lying on your back as well.

Hit an E chord and perhaps a D or G after that while simulating having sexual intercourse with the guitar functioning as your genitalia.

Hit a natural harmonic and whammy bar again while you stand. Then hold up one hand with the Hook'em Horns sign while you play the following part reeeal slow, but slowly increasing speed until you're going as fast as possible with only your left hand.

----0-2-3-2-0-2-3-2...etc

Hit the delay pedal now and double pick some high notes chosen at random. This will give the illusion that you're actually playing something complicated, so you should look like you're in deep thought. Look at your fret board and pretend you're thinking of some sort of complex musical composition.

Bring the guitar up to your mouth. Simulate playing with your teeth while actually using your left hand to hammer on and off notes.

End it all by smashing your guitar against the stage and collapse from exhaustion. This should work the crowd into a frenzy and a few hot chicks as well.

 This sounds very familiar

My advice? Improvise along, pick songs to improvise to that you need to play faster to than you are comfortable with to push yourself, and practice with a metronome on licks slowly building up speed :)

Metronome? What? You must want him to actually get better!

Bah!

Try this then. Get some nice feedback going and then break out the lighter fluid!
