Random song my friend and I made...

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9525696/TFLS.mp3

guitars - ec-1000 with EMG 81 in bridge DI to vintage overdrive, tsex30, voxengo boogex (spreshigh)

bass (not really happy with it)
high track - some eq, vintage overdrive
low track - eq again, vintage overdrive, tsex30 for the grind

drums
andy sneap kick and snare
addictive drums toms and cymbals

not much done to the vocals

lemme know what ya'll think... be harsh i dont mind :)

usually the low track for bass stays clean. vox sound awful...what exactly does "not much" mean in this context?? i hear lots of terrible room noise in the vox, if you re-do them, try and find a super dead closet to stuff with blankets and towels and try again. right now it sounds like he's in a shower stall.

cymbals sound ok, guitar sounds good, bass is complete doo-doo. lose the tse track. take the totally raw bass DI, by itself, only one track, and insert acmebargig BIG. turn the "master" knob all the way down, and turn off the compressor. bass track = done.

when you say vox are awful do you mean the actual voices? or just the way they are recorded. (if you say voices i won't be offended, its me and my friend fucking around haha)

but anyway its an m-audio mobilepre usb interface and a Sterling Audio ST55 that I borrowed from a friend

the recording... it sounds like a shitty room or maybe a weird EQ highshelf or both... try again taking my advice, track them in a deadened closet. hang up blankets and towels and shit to deaden a closet as much as you possibly can on all sides and ceiling if possible and then see how much different it sounds.

and if you want to add a highshelf to the vox (which i sometimes do) make sure you use the nicest hardware emulating eq as possible... reaEQ or cubase built in EQ will not sound very good for things like that.

Alright thanks for the tips. I'll give it another go later in the week. Do you have any EQ plugin recommendations?

anything that emulates vintage/analog gear is going to be better for high shelving on anything. (low shelving too, for that matter.) these EQ's will create a smoother more harmonically pleasant boost in presence, where as a DAW stock EQ is going to tend to make harsh/fatiguing boosts. i use SSL eq, but that as we all know is a tad pricey.
