hello guys,

i've recorded a band like a month ago, but as the band wasn't in a rush i didn't mixed the songs yet. but now i see that the guitars sound harsh and dead.
do you have any tips to make them sound smooth or something?

hey guys,

i asked permission from the band but they said no. what can i say?

amp is a 5150 and i'm using impulses.
i added waves c4 and some chorus and it sounds listen-able (sorry bad english) but what else could i do?

Maybe test other impulses? You can still give is your 5150 settings.

I am not too sure about the chorus on rhythm guitars though.

i'm tried some more more impulses but the problem is on how the guitars were recorded.

you can't really hear the chorus in the mix but it makes the guitar smoother ;)

I am worried about something similar with my band.

We recorded guitars ESP/EMG81 -> TS -> 5150 -> Mesa OS 4x12

And at first I thought the tone was fine, but after hearing the songs a few times, I started to feel the guitars were really thin and harsh sounding. We didn't capture DI's and its just a single 57 probably center of the dust cap. A lot of stuff has come up and we haven't even finished tracking everything yet so nothing has really been mixed at all. Hoping things turn out ok.

Well, It turned out that the guitarist hadn't change the guitar strings as I told him, but he lied.
Bryan how old are your strings? New strings make big difference in the tone ;)

edit: btw I suggest elixir (coated) strings.

They were DR's on my bassists ESP and they were put on right before tracking.

Re-track, with a good guitarist, good axe, good pickups, good strings, good cables, good converters, etc, saving DI's for reamp. Everything except that, is just fucking around with toys to me, you can't do any decent editing without DI's. If you are not allowed to share THEIR masterpieces, play something through the same setup by yourself so we can hear what you're talking about.

It's weird to do this without any clips but I'd say use better impulses. I don't recommend C4 and def. wouldn't recommend chorus on distorted guitar. Why would you do that?! :S

Try the "God's Cab" impulses. Those are my favorite free ones at the moment. Use the NO-TS versions: http://www.signalsaudio.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=8&Itemid=21

In mixing LESS IS MORE! 2-3 plugins done right is a million times better than 1000 plugins trying to do everything.

I totally agree but sometimes if your input is garbage you're trying to polish it to sound a little better.
I normally don't use much plugins.

Yes, that's what I'm using right now. Which one you like the best?
