Painful, very painful. While I was researching He Is Legend’s excellent new release Suck Out The Poison, I decided to go to Death Valley, get whomped by a rattler, and see what sucking poison was really like. Sure enough I arrived at about 6am and the critters were just coming out of their burrows to toast on the redstone rock surrounding me. Now I didn’t want to get deaded or nuthin’ so I chose a small one and let it gum me a little. Well that was just about the same time my arm blew up like a balloon so I knew I had to act fast: I took a big slug of whiskey and bit down hard on my arm. I now know two things. One: biting into one’s own flesh and then sucking is an experience I don’t wish on anyone. Two: I am pleased to report that listening to the album Suck Out The Poison is much more fun and cool than actually doing the real thing.

He Is Legend serve up a Southern-fried mixed grill of Grunge, Metal, Emo and modern commercial Rock. The album has a great feel to it, like an old Skynyrd record taken to its logical progression into the 21st century. Bucking against the trend of squeaky clean production and vocals pro-tooled to within an inch of their lives, there is a grimey, early Alice In Chains feel to the proceedings with each song picking you up and transporting you into a mini drama that is at once alluring and alarming. Vocalist Schuylar Croom says of the band: ‘I love true storytellers that can put out any kind of record that they want and it sells just because the music is good.’ A refreshing point of view considering the current trend in metal for obtuse and cryptic lyrics that are more often than not tedious in their blandness.

Suck Out The Poison is an oddity because it does handle the different styles admirably. But, the decision to have such an eclectic sound tends to mar the overall impression of the album. Tracks such as ’China White II’, ’Electric Throat’, ’Stampede’ and the title track ’Suck Out The Poison’ are all great specimens of modern rock and have a shelf life beyond 2007. Looking at the album as a whole though, the lack of cohesiveness will inevitably dictate its failure to find itself on any ‘top albums of 2007’ lists.

There are hidden depths to this album and anyone who acquires it certainly won’t be disappointed. I still think however that the band has a way to go before it reaches a point where any metal fan can hear one of their CDs and say: ‘ah yes, that’s the distinctive He Is Legend sound, this must be He Is Legend’.
