hearing loss

Yep I have constant tinnitus not sure how much of that is due to loud music though as Ive had it for most of my life . Imagine the sound of escaping air or white noise .

Yeah exact same with me dude. Gets me worried sometimes and it sounds like crickets (imagine night time).

+1. Sometimes when me tinnitus gets in, it feels like my ear is numb for a couple of seconds.

I had sever tinnitus in 2004-2008, then I moved away from Helsinki to a quiet town and didn't gig as a FOH-engineer at over-100-gigs-a-year -pace, and most of it went away in the first year. When it's totally quiet, I can still hear it, but thats why I have a fan on or music playing in the background when I sleep, so I get atleast a small noise floor to cover it up.

I only hear it really when I'm trying to sleep, so on some music goes :D I'll normally leave something like Dream Theater playing because their stuff is so long its easy to sleep to lol

I played drums for like a year and a half without any protection, but since then I've been quite careful about my hearing. I don't wear earplugs at concerts (mainly cos I can't find any that fit well enough, for cheap), but I don't go to them often at all.

One thing I've always been curious about.. if you start going deaf, and struggle to hear, and so turn things up louder, does that lead to MORE hearing loss? Or, in other words, if you have your iPod at 100% and go partially deaf because of that, will your deafness be restricted if your iPod can't go any louder?

I've had it for several years. It never gets better (for me)...only worse. It used to be I would only notice it when things were quiet. Noises would drown out the ringing. But now it's there all the time. But...I've just gotten accustomed to it. Either I can think about it and let it drive me crazy...or just accept it and get on with life.

dithering :p

I do have hearing protection, and i use it during live shows when i am a visitor. But (as stupid as i am) i only use them during the opening bands, and not during headliners. I still go home with a huge beep in my head.
When doing FOH i normally leave them out, but as a monitor tech i always put them in.

I have cheap Alpine Musicsafe Pro (20 euro), and i should make some custom earplugs. But i'm a cheapass :p

you dudes are all fucking deaf, that sucks hahahaha I think my hearing is fine so far, and I've been using plugs at concerts lately, I don't care if I look like a geek, it even sounds better and less tiring, so I enjoy it more

Edit: to keep making fun of the whole Americans thing, funny how they put an ugly fat kid in the picture, so "average" hahahaha.

Ps whoever gets butthurt over my comment can go eat a cake or something

@Dan

which earplugs do you use? Im still in the search for some that dont make everything sound like crap...

I guess I got lucky, cause I just bought the shittiest cheapest ones at a ******** and they worked pretty well, when I took them off I could hear some nasty fizz from the FOH which seemed to be decently covered up with the earplugs, only problem is they don't fit well and move often, and when they're not in my "sweet spot" then everything sounds like crap

edit: why on earth would the word phar ma cy be censured??

Yeah, you're right, it won't stop the spam but it might cut out any hyperlinks with that in them and stop the links from working.

custom molded earplugs were the best purchase I've ever made as a live sound engineer... you gotta protect what enables you to do the job in the first place

You will probably continue to get more deaf regardless even old house wifes go deaf.
And if you turn up volume to combat hearing problems your basically entering a vicious circle I firmly believe things like hearing aids damage your hearing further .
The best thing you can do is stop... when you notice that you cant pick out the detail in music . Take breaks after an hour at the most . I cant sustain a session for more than about 20 mins with out causing noticable increase of tinnitus but then I am getting on a bit .
Basically the tiny receptors in your inner ear need time to reset but each time they get hammered a few of them get killed off .
