neither go with somethign from dynaudio, adams, or even yamaha for that matter.. they will blow them completly out of the water..

These if he has the space and neighbors aren't an issue (cuz the bass is RIDICULOUS, and goes right through walls), these if he doesn't (they're not sold in a pair, he'd have to buy 2, hence the price)

I just got a pair of Yamaha HS50Ms, and so far I love them. They arent as harsh as I was expecting, and they really seem to reveal flaws in mixes, which is obviously a good thing. I've been listening to some of my favorite records on them to sort of get used to them, and it's amazing to suddenly notice so many things I've never heard before. Of course, my old monitors were passive event 20/20's so I guess almost anything is a step up from those.

Yeah, it's the MSP5's that are apparently much harsher, which makes them the better monitors in the strictest sense of the word because they're more like the NS10's in that they hype the shittiest frequencies so that if you can get your mixes sounding good on 'em, they'll sound better anywhere (I know that's the press release for the HS series, but I don't buy it, I'm pretty certain it's the MSP series that has that distinction). I'm gonna ask for a pair of HS50M's for XMAS, cuz they're gonna be my main pair of computer speakers, so I want to be able to use them as such (as well as using them as monitors) and not feel like there's an icepick going through my eardrums

That would be a sweet x-mas gift. You can't go wrong with their price either. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of low end they can produce. I figured the 5 inch woofers would leave them sounding a bit thin and tinny, but they're nice and solid, and everything is there for most purposes.

Coolness, I figure I've gotten some decent mixing done on my current $100 pair of computer speakers (these bad boys, check out those monstrous 2.5" woofers! ) because I've listened to at least 2 hours of music on them every single day for like the past two years, so even if they don't have much detail and the stereo imaging is a joke, I know how they respond, and I'm sure the Yamahas will be a huge step up in comparison, and I look forward to learning them just as well!
