Hello. I am doing some research for my Media Studies coursework. I would appreciate if you could answer some simple questions:

  • What would you expect off a new Heavy Metal radio show?
  • How would you expect it to be named? What would you not like to see in a name?

If you feel these are too vague just shout.

Cheers!

  • What would you expect off a new Heavy Metal radio station?

Absolutely no nuMetal. It has to play tr00 metal: e.g. power, prog, death, black, traditional, classic, thrash etc. Specific band sessions are cool on specific days. In the US, rock stations play sessions like "mandatory Metallica" where they play 2 hours of non-stop Metallica. It would be cool to have something like "mandatory Maiden" or "mandatory Priest". Also, sessions covering 'up and coming artists', or unsigned bands would be great coverage of unearthing the next generation of talent. No commercials, and 24 hour airplay.
  • How would you expect it to be named? What would you not like to see in a name?

Don't care what it's called. As long as it doesn't have the words 'heavy metal' in the title. That is too cheesy.

What would I expect? Nu-Metal, Rap Metal, "Hard Pop", and pretty much anything except metal. If they did play any metal at all, it would be consigned to antisocial hours in the middle of the night. Hell, even Totalrock seems to be heading that way. I used to listen to Charlie Andrews playing serious quantities of power metal every afternoon. He still does, just now it's late at night.

So that's what I'd expect. What would I want? Well that's a different proposition entirely. I'd want a station that played metal. Yes, there would be specialist shows catering to power metal, black metal, and other niche sub-genres. For for the primetime shows, though, I'd like a variety. I don't expect to like every track they play. I accept that they'll even play stuff I absolutely hate. But I want a radio station I can listen to and know that I'll like most of what they play. Perhaps on average, I'd expect to hear one track an hour that I really loved, one I hated, and a bunch of other stuff that lay somewhere between the two. The way radio used to be... Hmmm. Having just reread that, I think I'll go and get my pipe and slippers now :) I wouldn't want any Nu-Metal (or Mallcore as it should more properly be called). In this idealised hypothetical world of yours, you explicitly said it was a new Heavy Metal station, and I'm afraid that Mallcore doesn't fall into that category for me. But realistically, it would probably have to be broadened into a general rock station (including the various "fake metal" genres), in order to gain enough listeners to be profitable. See Totalrock again...

Oh, BTW, I'd also like it to be streamed on the internet in a format I can listen to (i.e., NOT Windows Media). Ideally Ogg Vorbis like the BBC are doing, but MP3 or RealAudio would be acceptable.

I don't care what it's called in the slightest. I can't see that the name is relevant. Obviously if you're going to call it "Country Music FM", then you're going to struggle to pull in the desired target audience. But that's just a marketing problem for the station. Whether I tuned in or not would be solely dependent on the music they played.

what I expect: no nu-metal and nothing like rap metal or other kind of metal that may ressemble. I would like if they play not only one song from a record like in commercial music they release songs one by one . I think the station would need to play a random song from the album

the name: as long as it doesnt sound like "metal forever" for example or something like that

hope it helps you
cheers

That is absolutely fantastic, JayKeeley, Tet and pits :D this is a great help! If anyone else has anything to say, even if it's just "I agree with them" then do please post and let me know. You're all wonderful, every one of you here! :D

I agree ith them. NO NU-Metal crap!!
We see enough of that loser stuff on MTV EVERYDAY. I'm sick of it. It would have to play Power, Black, Death, Thrash, Gothic, Old School, and maybe just a litle Classic Rock (or should I say Classic Metal?) like Sabbath, AC/DC, and the like.

As for a title, hmmmmmmmm, gimme a minute......

How about, "Music Of The Gods" or "Titan Radio" or "Candlelight Epics" ?

Just a few thoughts. :)

(Shrugs) LOL

Nicely said, mate :D well, this page has been printed off and handed in :) now we can relax....
