Greetings to all
I’ve got a question for you guys who are making live sound.
If I have a 75 square meter place with an 6 meter high ceiling with concrete walls. And this is filled with 450 persons, what Pa systems would you recommend, and how would you mice up the drum set.
I’m not going to do the sound myself, I’m just checking if the guy they contracted isn’t trying to get advantage of the guy who is planning this event.
The Equipment that is already in the place is the following:

10 x sm 57
4 x sm 58
2 x Di box
32 channel mixer (for live sound, so no direct outputs but inserts and bus outputs)
And enough cables for everything

PA:
1 full range per side (they didn’t tell me the power amps nor the W)

Monitoring:
3 Floor monitors
1 drum fill

Processors
1 stereo compressor/limiter
2 Fx units
Eq for monitoring
Eq for Pa

I think that’s everything important I have to mention.

Now this guy is telling the people in charge to hire 2 extra comps, condenser mics as overheads for the drums, and one more fx unit. And also one additional full range system per side.
I’m thinking that maybe it would be more useful to get subwoofers for each system that is already there instead of one additional full range per side, as I’ve already been in this place and the sound is always pretty harsh and with not enough lows. And as for the condenser mics, I’m not that sure about it because it’s pretty heavy music and the stage isn’t that big, wouldn’t the rest of the instruments get inside this mics? What would you recommend? Also wish mic would you recommend for the kick drum? I wish I could give a more detailed list of the equipment and characteristics of the place, but this is all I have.

Thanks in advance
Sorry for my bad English :p

Not to sound like an ass, but that place sounds like either you aren't telling us the whole picture, or then that place sounds totally unprofessional... a 450 person venue and only 2 PA-speakers, no subwoofers and only SM57's as microphones and only one stereo compressor? :err: Even my personal live-equipment that I carry in two cases has more stuff than that (except for the PA)

You’re not sounding like an ass at all, it IS a very unprofessional space, like most of the places here in my country (Peru, Lima) for this kind of music. I've lived almost my whole life in Germany and was shocked at how bad the "venues" for this kind of music are in peru. It is almost impossible to go to a gig and have a descent sound, not even from de mixer spot. Any suggestions for this "bad case" situation?

More speakers and power amps, condenser mics and more compressors will definitely help you, like the guy suggested. You can do lots of stuff with SM57s, they work on almost everything except kick and overheads. Sure, there are better mics for a few things, but SM57s kick major ass, as you surely know. Subs are also very nice, as you said yourself.

Just one question, how the hell are you going to fit 450 people onto a 75 square meter floor? That sounds insanely crowded.

You probably do not need overhead mics in a place that small, especially since the ceiling is relatively low. You do definitely need some subs, I'd suggest at least two 18" subs per side with decent power if you want people to be able to "feel" the kick instead of just hearing it. Get some gates too if you can, at least one for the kick, the rest you can get away without. For your kick mic I'd try and get an Audix D6 or a beta52, you can get away with 57s for everything else.
