Help with recording / Mac- Garage Band

I was wondering if anyone here has any experience using "garage band" on a mac for recording music? I have a mac book pro with this software on it.

1. What type of hardware do i need to start using it?

2. What general tips if any can you all give me in using this program?

Lastly,what are some other relatively inexpensive recording options?
