I'm happy to see more people getting into the band. Like everyone else said, either blackwater park, or still life. Work your way back from there, and know that it might take a while to get into anything before still life. It's worth it though because the older material really does kick ass. Don't listen to the others about devil driver. They do suck, but if you like them then I got no beef with ya. You'll probably make that decision for yourself after you start to get into the scene more.

After the show i of course wanted to chat with Dez and all the other guys, but then Dez asked why i wazn't listening to Opeth. Dez said they were fucking great so i checked em out.

He is purposely trying to lose fans? Naw, that's pretty cool of him as a person, but I don't see how anyone who would potentially enjoy Opeth immensely would find any pleasure in going back to Devildriver. Maybe it is possible?

If you want a more serious suggestion however, I would suggest you go through the Opeth catalogue forwards, to get a better idea of their progression as a band. Still buggers me why everyone is suggesting you work your way through reverse chronological like.

Seriously though, About 4 years ago, before I downloaded music, I was into the mainstream popular metal as well.. Deftones, Korn, Sepultura, Static X... with my Tr00 metal backups- Slayer, Megadeth, IronMaiden, MachineHead.. and so on..

Then I started downloading and found Opeth on accident. Since then, my 3 fav bands are Opeth, Children of Bodom and In-Flames.. If this kid is just getting into Opeth, then there is a chance for him.

If you like opeth you might like Agalloch, Asmegin, Enslaved, The Project Hate, Rapture, Orphaned Land, Novembre, Moonsorrow, Dimmu Borgir, Strapping Young Lad, Death, etc etc. Enjoy

Dude, wtf are you talking about... Opeth is full of riffs. And there are tons of bands that base their music on riffs that kick ass. Devildriver probably blow, but down bash riffs..
