hey there. welcome to the Symphony X family! :) im not sure which songs/cd you have heard, but you really can't loose with any of their albums. i would say try The Odyssey or V. those 2 seem to be a lot of fans favorites, including myself.

hey dam, welcome to the group.. but before asking questions, a great thing to do is to browse some threads first and make sure theres not already a topic on the same subject happening. Just jump in on current threads and voice your opinions or check out things others recommend.

Other than that, we hope you enjoy your time here

stay away from the first cd for now because there's a different vocalist. might be better to get more into Sym X before listening to it, although it doesn't really sound much different. Just start with the most recent cd's and work your way backwards, easiest thing to do (and probably the easiest to find)

Like Selppinevoli said, stay away from the first disc for now. That was the first one I bought (best buy only carried that), and its nothing like "REAL" Symphony X. As stated, V and the Odyssey are great picks.

Divine Wings Of Tragedy is a GREAT album, Twilight in olympus is their most progressive, and most underrated, Damnation game is alright, lacks good production, also underrated, but Cant go wrong with V, Odyssey or DWOT

the music is still good, but yeah the singer is pretty horrible. Its worth getting later, once u've heard more recent Symphony X.

I started with V - The New Mythology Suite. I still think it's their best, a flawless album, one of the few perfect albums I've ever heard. Therefore, get this one first. Then get The Odyssey, which contains the flawless title track. Save the first one for last. Of the others, it's up to you.

totally my view as well... :Spin:

I actually like the first album. The might be inferior to Russell Allen, but alot of other people are too. I woul'nt consider the guy horrible though, he is just bland. The music and melodies and arrangements are up with any symphony x album. Well the sound quality is'nt quite as good though. But it does have classic cuts such as Premonition, A Lesson Before Dying, Rapture or Pain and Thorns of Sorrow. It also has some cool lyrics. CONQUER THE WICKED!!!!!

Hey Dam!!! Welcome to our family!

I say check them all out! They all have their own feel about them, so just enjoy the music and its nice to have new friends here.

Hey Dam,

Of course the answer to this is going to depend on what it is you like about SyX.
Their heaviest, shreddiest albums are DWOT and The Odyssey
Their most epic and Proggy are Twilight and V
The first 2 are definitely great, and worth getting, but as others have said, not quite on the same level, so'd I'd save them for last.

My personal opinion is that V is the best. In fact it is the best progressive metal album EVER, period. However, I should mention that 2 of the greatest songs ever recorded are both on The Odyssey. They are: The Odyssey, and Awakenings.

Again, like others have said...you really can't go wrong.

And one more thing...don't get the impression from all these comments that the first album is weak. The music is GREAT, just the vocals aren't up to the same standard that Russell later created.

yeah well i think to kinda sum up what everyone has said here, if theres one thing about symphony x cds its that they are very consistant. you really can't go wrong with any of them. for a lot of fans its pretty tough to pick a favorite cd cause they are all excellent in there own ways.
