High-gain chord clarity?

I don't use too much gain, it helps a lot. Also, I've always felt that EMG's seem to get mushy easier than most passives (like the Lundgren M7 in my custom, which is probably the clearest pickup I've ever had).

+1 for lower gain settings and passive pickups. EMGs always sounded too clangy for me... too much "fizz". I also don't use a "distortion" pedal, rather the gain settings on whichever amp I'm playing through. I am definitely not playing as heavy of music as most of you... But even when recording metal I turn the gain way down and stack a few tracks.
