Holiday Season is Upon us - what gives?

first of all NAD you need an ass-whuppin' for putting TIME BANDITS down for one of the worst! yeah, it's retarded, but come on! you MUST have a soft-spot for absurd movies with midgets. i mean, come on... it has midgets. midgets going back in time, running from god, stealing shit and kicking ass. what more could you want from a film? i mean... MIDGETS!

it's funny that gilliam's next movie, BRAZIL, would be SO different. BRAZIL is my favorite movie of all time. period. i could name all the reasons this move is the best ever made, but i don't want to waste bandwith (oh yeah, i already do with all my stupid posts, like this one....)

and i was about to say something else but dreamlord did it for me: troll 2 is the worst movie. ever. of all time. i mean NILBOG! little bastards that turn you into plants! (it's only redeeming factor would be that the goblins are little and sort of like midgets, in a way, if you really think about it long and hard)

Thing about John Carpenter was that he jumped the shark at Big Trouble in Little China. I can't believe that the guy who directed The Fog, Halloween, and The Thing went on to direct Ghosts of Mars, Memoirs of an Invisible Man, and Escape from LA.
I'm not sure if you're saying Big Trouble in Little China is good or bad here.???

Personally, I thought Big Trouble was a hoot and a helluva good time. It's definitely a guilty pleasure type movie because it's dumb as dirt, but the it's just a goofy good time. You can definitely tell the actors are having fun with it.

Ghosts of Mars was utter tripe. I had mixed feelings with Escap from LA. On the one hand, it's Snake "f/n" Plisken. On the other, it's a sequel to a fucking classic that should have stood alone instead of being dragged down with a far-inferior sequel.

Escape From New York was a blast.

LOLERZ NILBOG!!!!! Those clever writers. Who'd of thunk it? NILBOG!!!!!! Could that be "goblin" spelled backwards???? durrrrrrr..........

Good. I liked it very much, although it was panned heavilly.

Escape From New York was a blast.
Yep, them were the good ol' days. Seen The Fog? Awesome, awesome, low budget slasher. I mean, it's got pirate ghosts for crissakes!

I haven't seen The Fog. Will definitely check it out.
You haven't?? Oh man, if you crack open a few beers and watch that, you're going to love it. I mean, it's like discovering the lost Carpenter movie or something. And as with Halloween, Escape from NY, and The Thing, he's done the music himself - those typical creepy signature synths that he always plays - I bet you'll love it if you like all those other early JC movies.

Those are some pretty craptastic Nilbogs.

I didn't say I didn't like Time Bandits, I just said it was terrible! Don't think that I didn't near shit myself when I saw the DVD at Target for under $10 and grab myself a copy!

If you think Time Bandits is terrible, you haven't watched much. Besides, how can you fault a movie that ends with the hero's parents exploding when they touch "pure evil"? C'mon. I personally think it's a much better movie that Baron Munchausen (or however it's spelled), but Gilliam's best is definitely 12 Monkeys, one of the best scifi movies I've ever seen.

As for John Carpenter, the only thing of his I actually like is Big Trouble in Little China. It's classic camp. I re-watched Escape From New York like a year ago, and it raped my childhood.

Have you guys EVER watched MST3K? Movies like "Parts, a Clonus Horror", "Hobgoblins", and "Merlin's Magical Shop of Wonders" (or something like that) are so much more painfully bad than ANYTHING mentioned in this thread, even with the humor thrown in by the MST3K guys. Hell, go watch "A Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell" with the director's commentary where he makes fun of his own damn movie, it's a blast, but still difficult to endure.

Man... so much to comment on in this thread...

1. Night of the Comet is different. A comet turns everyone who was watching into dust as it passes over, while the only people who survive are those who were indoors and closed off in some sort of steel (i don't remember which). Those sheltered, but not well enough appear to be fine at first, but slowly (depending on how exposed they were) turn into light-shunning scabby people who are all crazy (but still able to think and talk). A rag tag group of teenage survivors hang out in the city, avoid the weirdos, and end up in some base that is supposed to help them. I would say it is much more similar to Omega Man than 28 Days.

2. The Omega Man has little to do with I Am Legend. Last Man On Earth starring Vincent Price is a superior adaptation.

3. 28 Days Later was very good.

4. Vampires is awesome and one of my favorite Carpenter movies (coming from a die-hard Carpenter fan). I'm a proud owner of it on dvd. I even own the sequel which I admit is sort of lame.

hmmm...

All this talk about movies and DVD's gets me to thinking...

I am a manager of a new type of store called movie trading company. Actually movie and video games manager, but I digress..We specialize in used dvd's and VHS videos, cheaply too...

If any of my buds on the list has been looking for any titles, please email em to me. I can check around our stores, and maybe, find them. We have shit loads of rare stuff out of print. A variable treasure trove. We get lots of rare metal cds sometimes too from our warehouse. Where the hell do they get all these out of print metal cds used is my question.

Just trying to be a helpful metalhead here...

Evil C....

Yo EC, can you give some examples of 'rare' movies? And with regards to the DVDs, are they all specifically region 1, or do you stock multi-regionals, because most of the shit I like 'aint American.

Yes, I do believe Evil C will be getting lots of requests...

I need to get me one of them multi-region DVD player thingies to replace my stupid door prize DVD player.

This is dumb, I was farking around with my DVD-ROM last night, and you can change the region code on it, but only 5 times, and if you try to change it a 6th time, the drive kills itself! I'm sure that can be hacked around somehow, but still, what the fuck is the point in that? Anti-piracy or something?

@NAD - although I think getting a multi-region DVD player is the right thing to do (since they're so cheap these days), you might want to hunt down "Region 0" movies in the meantime. For example, films like "Battle Royale", and "Ichi the Killer" are all available on Region 0 now, on eBay, from lots of Japanese re-sellers (based in the US) for $10 a pop.
