I am always reading threads about all the different bands that are talked about on this board. I usually try to find an mp3 or something around on the net to give me a little taste. So I downloaded a Lanfear track today because I read a thread a while ago about them.

Once I listened to it, it took me by total surprise. I heard they were Power Metal, and they were I was just not expecting to hear death vocals in a Power Metal band. Though where ever I read about them at thanks. This will definitely be a band I will look more into.

If you like your power metal with a little nastiness on it I strongly recommend you get your hands on ensiferum and Wintersun...it's like Gamma Ray with power and harsh vocals..I am currently hooked on these bands...:headbang:

I have Ensiferum, but not Wintersun I will have to check them out. Ensiferum though is extremely addicitve, they are just too damn catchy! Thanks TBJ.

Well, actually wintersun and ensiferum are interconnected. Ensiferum's guitarist/vocalist/composer left and formed wintersun!

Wintersun is a little more technical but still as epic and kickass as Ensiferum!

I guess i am the culprit, i have been toasting LANFEAR for awhile now, and yes they were a total surprise to me also. If you liked them, then there is another one you need to give a listen to. This one was recommended to me by none other than LANCE KING. The band is Elsesphere you can get a good sample of them at www.intromental.com.

Lanfear does not employ much in the way of death vocals at all. I think one of two songs might include an evil sounding death type snippet, but in general there isn't death metal vocals present on the two discs I own (the art effect, and another golden rage).

making mental note of this band, i will try to find something this weekend...

Latest two cds, Art Effect and Another Golden Rage can be found pretty easily in the US through Nightmare Records. Their first two (or is it three) cds are gonna be a pain to hunt down. For the first albums their sound was a bit more straight forward and their old vocalist, while capable, pales combared to Altheimer.

You cannot be referring to their second disc, "Zero Poems." That is one of my all time favorites and a true progressive metal album. It had hints of jazz, prog rock, death metal, and a pain of salvation vibe in places.

After the vocal change was when they lost most of their truly progressive style to become a prog/power hybrid.

I could not agree with you more Glenn. First off, I must say that Lanfear totally kick ass. Zero Poems is an absolutely incredible album thattouches many different genres. I was definitely caugfht off guard by their next release as they had a new singer and changed their style; however, i was still very impressed. Their latest release "Another Golden Rage" is mind blowing in my opinion.

With that said, if you want to hear an album that sounds so much like Zero Poems, you need to check out a band called Voyager, who I believe are on DVS Records. I think the album is called Element V. The first time I heard it, I instantly thought of Lanfear's Zero Poems.

Zero Poems is a grower for me, big time. I still don't quite like it as much as the latter material, but I appreciate it more every time I hear it.

I'd love to find that Art Effect CD. I've been casually looking for years, and I liked what I've heard. This is an excellent band. Named after a character in Robert Jordan's books, too. :)

Sounds like the bands in this thread are right up my alley. I have a feeling after I listen to some song samples I'm going to have a bunch more CDs to buy...

Edit: Listened to samples of each band...decided to buy a Wintersun album. It's been too long since I've bought an album with that style vocals.

By the way tbj, cool necromancer. ;)
