how come wheatier, heartier breads are so much better than white bread

i mean, it really really sucks that i wouldn't touch white bread with a ten-foot pole, but if i want to make one of the aforementioned sandwiches, i have to buy a loaf.

and then make six of the aforementioned sandwiches.

Am I the only person that smashes their bread as flat as it can get for my sandwhiches? People always look at me weird when I do that.

I had a pumpernickel grilled cheese sandwich last weekend; it was ok, but I agree that white bread's the best for grilled cheese.

i eat about forty or fifty times as much rye bread as i do white--i even get rye toast when i go out for breakfast. but no, when it's grilled, it's not especially good.

i think the problem may be that the key with grilled cheese is the butter soaking into the bread and then being fried, and the heartier breads don't absorb it nearly as completely.

when my mom makes me grilled cheese i always ask for italian bread because alex is right, wheat bread is yucky with the cheese.
