One of the questions i ask to alot of people is how did the underground get a sudden surge of popularity. Look at Opeth's recent spike in album sales. Hell look at a bunch of other sales. This really came out of nowhere. Same with punk ( die rebel scum). Now some of you may say well band's generally do gain sales or explode but a whole scene is quite puzzling.

Example #1. Girl at school wearing an Emperor shirt. I told her good choice for music. She said i thought it was a skateboarding brand.

Example #2. Hot Topics. Nothing more.

Example #3. A random group of people with *gasp* more shirts. 1 Extol. 2 In Flames (1 actually listened to 'em)

Example #4. Ozzfest and Meshugguh

Example #5. Warped Tour has experienced 4 times as many ticket sales outside of Orange county and Berkely (basically the homfront of a nice amount of punk)

Could this be the new trend of the future. Let there be a God in this great time of need.
Why am I complaining??? Look at the quality of some new albums.

It depends how far down you want to go..

Obviously if a girl thought Emperor was a skateboarding brand, then I think at least they're still safe.

Well Emperor is probablt the biggest Bm band in the world (I'm not counting CoF as black or metal here). Meshuggah has been on big tours before, Warped tour has ALWAYS been mainstream. Hot Topis has NOTHING to do with the underground....

Actually all those things you mentioned I consider rather "poser-like".
But I'm not calling YOU a poser just those things :)

yeah demonspell got it there there really isnt any underground anymore with a bunch of kids who want to be original. surfacing underground is better put i guess.

"Blame the internet" hehe...)
Without it we wouldn't get to know all the bands that we
DO know today!)

But, how do things that are underground get surfaced?
It depends on ONE person! Like if I had a magazine, one
day I decided to do a review of an unknown band... Maybe
one day a guy working at a radiostation decides to play
something underground etc.

This is all up to one person, all the time. Sometimes the band
or the "thing" that get this "free commercial" gets lucky and
there you go...

Is this something that will just exist now? I'm not sure...
We've always wanted to dig up something original... but it
is very fashionable to have an attitude, and be original.
Create your own style...

But I think it will take ages and ages before I see my
co-workers walk around in an emperor shirt, cause they
LIKE THE BAND! Hehe.... >)
At the moment the punk-style is "the thing"in Scandinavia,
and I doubt that any of the chiqs walking around with a
six pistols shirt enjoy the music...

I agree. The Internet has a lot to do with promoting bands. I wouldn't know of half the bands I know now if I didn't come online one day and start looking.

Also, the recent tour for Opeth is what I think made the sales for Blackwater Park so great. They've been showing their faces a lot more in the past few years in the states and they are REALLY GOOD. People catch on...as they should.

you have. In some ways that is good that people are finally listening to decemt music. But it also robs us of our identity.

On another hand i got arcturus's new cd. Great music but have you read the lyrics..... ughhh . I had quiet a good laugh when Ihsahn started to sing about white viluptious cum haha

well, guys, the bands above mentioned are no way underground...check out www.anus.com (american underground nihilist society) and especially cehck out their message boards and see how many of those bands they are talking about you know. just because a band is death metal doesnt make it underground...there are many underground rock bands out there for christs sake.
