Yes you should. It takes several hours of having no load on it to cause it, but it does happen to the amplifier. It just happened recently with my 5150 becuase my boss likes to get high as shit when he does projects and he left mine on without being patched to a cab...
As far as using a Weber as a guitar DI, I have no clue, if you e-mail him he'll get back with you usually within the hour or the same day at least.
I understand that the THD HotPlate is probably more attractive than the Weber, however, how classic is gigantic silk screened white letters spelling out "MEGA DUMP"?
