Yes, and there is no 'method' per se. Just blend till it sounds good, print, make sure phase is in order then gogogo.

I usually spend at least 2 hours trying to build custom drum samples for most bigger projects. Usually end up with between 3 to 6 different sample blends per drum, if not more.

Kick and snare, all the time. I just bounce two different samples triggered off midi (I only work with midi for replacement), and blend/eq/adjust to taste.

I have some kicks that I really like that I made in advance from combining kicks on their own, but lately I've just been bouncing 4-5 and eq'ing them all together in the project itself.

always, Im usually blending 3 snares, 3-4 kicks, 2 toms (for each tom)

my only method is after printing each drum (so thats printing a separate track for each snare, so 3 snare tracks) I use tab to transient on each one just because no samples are perfectly matched together. and then printing the final snare track from there.
my reasoning is, even tho it may be subtle, i just dont like flamming shit.

EDIT: sorry if that didnt make sense, Im bad at explaining things.
I can try again if you need :P

I can't remember the last time I only used one drum sample.

I'll often have one or two 'main' samples, and then maybe a third/fourth providing something that main ones don't have.. blending a ringy snare in here, or a really beefy snare when the main 2 are high-pitched, cracky ones, works well. Then my OMG room sample and maybe some Slate room.

the reason I ask is because I used to just print the tracks and line 'em up, but since I got Trigger I've been trying to take advantage of its ability to load multiple samples.. but it doesn't seem to sound that spectacular. I can't tell if my mind is just playing tricks on me since I can't "see" it all lined up and whatnot.

i'm blending kicks, usually 1-2 slate plus 1-2 other samples....lately i've been trying to retain as much natural snare as possible, so if i'm blending in a sample it's either just a tiny amount of a fitting slate sample, or i'll grab a sample off the project, process that, and blend it in. so, usually 1 snare.

I'm often blending kick and snare, never toms.
definitely not blending them in trigger though, always print them onto seperate tracks.
that way I have more control during mixing, usually there are section where I'll automate the room louder, in some fills I'll automate a cracky snare softer etc

yeah I always keep my rooms separate but as far as close samples I was trying to use Trigger just as a matter of convenience. guess I'll go back to the old way.

Because I work mainly with the ussual plugins, I want to blend samples to create my own sound. And I really like the outcome of multiple samples on snare and kick :)

for snare I'll run 2 tracks ... 1 is the natural snare with all its glorious bleed (with a slight low cut) and then another clean sample which is either just a clean hit of the same snare from the session or one of my go-to snare samples. I have yet to use something like Slate for blending in a snare group

Toms I use a blend of the original tom tracks with as much junk cut out as possible and all cleaned up with either clean hits of the same toms if the kit sounds nice or Sneap / Slate samples. Usually about 50% in that case but if I'm using the actual toms from the kit I'll do it more 75% clean hit vs original track

I only ever use one kick track and thats either 100% replaced with a clean hit from the kit or a sample ... so far Lasse's kicks have been killing ANYTHING by Slate for that

cymbal sweeteners (if needed) are just from a go-to list of great clean cymbal hits I have from a couple other sessions and I'll blend them into the main OHs but only slightly. I try to get as much of the natural kit sound going as possible because to me, even blending in samples, that is what determines how the other elements should sound and automatically gives each recording its own unique sound and character

Kicks I've got a few samples that are great up front...

Snares yes but I keep in mind i'll be using 40-50% of the original snare sound in there...

bd and snare gets replaced 100% most of the time.
toms nearly always natural - depending on the drummer.

Im leaning to a more natural drum sound. Atleast if the drummer is good enough to get nice and consistent hits on the snare and toms. It is so much better to use triggers/samples to support the original source then just replace it. But not all drummers are as good to get something useful out of the snare so then i have to replace it 100%.
Kick is usually replaced 100%, usually 2 different samples and up to 3. Toms are often blended with samples, i tend to not cut the hits, the bleed can give some support and wideness to the snare.

The last 3 project i've been using a Peluso 2247 LE as a close ambience mic, where the snare hits are peaking about 3-4db's. It is an awesome way to get a more realistic snare. I used that technique at my last recording which i posted here.

I LOVE blending drums.. And then I listen to the last 2 Black Daliah albums and then it makes me love straight up real drums more. :notworthy

Can you elaborate?

I put it about half a meter in front of the kit, aiming it towards the snare. Of course there is allot of bleed but the snare peaks about 4db's as i described if the drummer is playing well.

I tried it after thinking about my snare sound, and from what i've read that those producers that are achieving awesome natural drum sounds says that their snare sound is coming allot from OH and room mics.

Here is one of my latest recording, using that method, all natural drums. The snare ringing is allot from the snare close ambience mic.

Hope I made any sense :)
