how many times do you record solos?

For me, I record till I like something. Then learn that part, repeat (while adding in the part I like where I like it).

On those rare occasions when I know what a lead should be, just once. If I can't nail it, I'll try again if I am obsessing, otherwise I practice it more offline then rerecord it later.

Take after take stuff just drives me nuts, though :loco:

I think I've only doubled once or twice. But I have one idea that will require doubling, but in a strange way.

As many times as it takes. I do solos in sections. If something doesn't fit, it gets dubbed over. When it comes to harmonies, additional tracks are added. I usually have 3 or 4 solo tracks in a song to accommodate all the changes.

I sometimes double track, obvs for stuff like harmonies (playing stuff an octave higher turned down really low in the mix always sounds awesome)

just double tracking a whole solo (especially if it's shreddy) hides a lot of mistakes and generally sloppy players do this. Like 'Sinister Mephisto' said, most the shadows fall solos i can remember are double tracked AND zakkk wylde does a lot of double tracking, but i'm not saying those dudes are sloppy. Can sound really cool esp if panned hard left and right
