How tight do you set your gate...

...on snare in a metal-Production?
Do you gate everything out or do you leave some bleed in (floor)?
how fast do you set your release settings on the gate?
is it more importand for you to have a really clean snaretrack and rik loosing some of the "tail" or do you rather live with a little more crosstalk and stuff to keep all of the orinial snares tail?

i think it depends on how much editing you have to do. the more editing, the less bleed you can use. if i have a good drummer and not too much hihat bleed on the snare top mic i usually expand the snare with 6 - 9 db's of reduction, usually i have the release around 120 ms

I would agree with an expander over a gate. The gate can get to robotic shitty sounding... Where as the expander with sound a bit more natural. And if something does trigger it accidentally it wont be noticed as much.

Man, I was trying a gate on a snare today. I wanted to throw the fucking thing out the door. Basically trying to get rid of bleed from hat and kick to no avail.

I'll give a noise gate one shot to work - if it won't cooperate, I yell at it and proceed to manually fade-out to silence when I don't need sound (this way, with a quick fade-out and not a simple bar-select and instant volume drop there's no 'cutoff' and just a really quick disappearing of annoying bullshit) because I haven't the patience to learn how to set things like that.
