How to get Overkill/Anthrax bass sound going direct? What plug in etc?

I love Overkills clunky sound...Any ideas? I have a USA Fender bass (I am a guitar player) and am recording soon.

Use a pick.

Combine the clean DI track, with a fairly gritty track using a amp sim. For the amp sim you want more growl than buzz. Mix to taste.

Yeah, speaking of that bass tone, I'm diggin the bass on the new Megadeth song "Gears of war". Pretty similar.

You should place an aditional mic on the tweeter - if you have one.

Note: D.D. Verni from Overkill's a pick player and Frankie Bello is predominantly finger style. But there's lots of high-mids in both their tones which helps cut through a mix. A blended DI and Amp/Amp sim signal will do the job fairly easily with a touch of distortion to bring out that "grind" you can hear in their sounds.

Important: use new strings!

Ok, Does anyone mic a bass cab anymore? I've got an Ampeg 115. It has a little tweet in the corner, and a 15. I just noticed this tweeter, after owning the amp for two years . What do you use to mic bass?

Just throwing another option out there... Try a condenser a few feet in front of the cab and blend with a DI if needed.

I've had good results with an AT3035 for a nice, cutting bass tone.

Yes, but I also do DI at the same time.

Yea - allways real amp/cab + DI. I remember countless recordings were i did not use the DI later, just the mics. I like mics/real-amp more than all that DI-Reamp-Ampsimulation stuff.

We used an Ibanez 5 string, hard pick, a Sans Amp bass driver DI, & a Distressor.


Actually, a few of you fuckers said the bass was "too clean" ...whatever the hell that means!

Always, but sometimes it does not matter when put in contest. But one can always phase align in the DAW...

No, I assume because I am close micing the cab with one mic and the DI is comming out of the amp (balanced out). I don't own a sansamp yet but plan to as everyone I have talked to swears by them
