How to work with blending samples. Methods & tricks?

Depends on the project and what it contains (midi vs live drums vs a combo)

If there is Midi I just usually blend the Slate Kicks by loading 2 up in slate and tweaking to taste. Then I usually bounce to another track record the audio. Then use the midi from the pre-bounce to throw trigger on to add my fave Lasse kick for some meat.

If its real drums then I just usually throw trigger on if it sounds good but needs "somthing". I do this by boucing to a 2nd track and loading up trigger on that track.

If the project is a combo I use the same method as the first really.

From there route them all to a "kick" bus, and be done with it.

Do you blend the eq:s as well? Take the up to 135hz from another and the rest from another? Do you do collective eq to snare samples? Those things would really help. I have lasses samples but didnt get the snare to really sound nice. But heard some real gold ones.

Yep,

Prime example of this for me is I use Kick 10 in slate and I filter out everything from 40hz down and 2k Up. Then i layer the Panty kick over the top and filter out everything from 2k down. Thats using the EQ in Slate btw, then if I need any more I use the parametric in my DAW

If I need some beef I will usually throw on any one of the beautifully samples Lasse Kicks and just use everything from 150 - 250 down.

Cool tips guru, I was just layering samples on top of each other, didnt sound to bad but 'shaping' each sample to fit each other is cool..will check it out..

Just remember don't take any of this as LAW. Do what you think sounds good. Its your production and your sonic creation.

The reason for me doing what I do is I go for a very specific type of kick sound that isn't the most popular around these parts. My kicks are very Bass and Tick heavy, and when I say VERY I mean VERY. They are EXTREMELY scooped. Its basically just THUD and TICK. I like the bass of my kick to sit around 70 - 80hz, and the tick to be around 4k - 6k. Of course this is also for "metal" so I wouldn't be using settings like this for a punk band or anything poppy.

My bass guitars low end usually sits around 60hz, so I try and go about 75 - 80 with the lows of my kick, then scoop the fuck out of it!

The Panty kick in slate really ads a nice "smack" to the kick just where I like it.

Regarding blending samples,no one mentioned pitch...

I often stuggle to match pitch of different samples, any tips how to do it easy?

It depends on SO many factors!
What the music is; how good the drums sound in the first place.. etc...
I try and get the drums sounding as fat, consistent and rockig as possible in the mix WITHOUT samples first;
and then sneak them in to support the mics.
With Metal It's generally more sample than rock, but if i can use as little as possible then thats preferable to me!
