Fuck, I spent all last week eating peanut butter sandwiches so I could afford some HS80M's on craiglist. Just hooked them up and I see what you guys were talking about in the mids, my ears are going to fucking DIE. Definitely an entirely different experience than my well used 1st gen KRK Rokit 5's. I can actually hear lowend with kickdrums and bass, a new world.

This guy used them to listen to CD's and has less then 50hrs on them with the volume up two notches. I don't believe they are even broken in yet.

I'm very fond of my HS80s as well. I did have to flick the highs-switch down though. Eventough the sound was very detailed, I found it incredibly tiring to listen to for prolonged periods. So I just put it down, and by now I know what highs are supposed to sound like in that setting, without getting annoyed by them at all.

Also, a week or 2 ago I flicked the mids-switch up to see what that would sound like, since I read somewhere that this brought them more into NS10 territory, and I think it's really awesome. Never heard NS10s, but all I can say is that it's like putting a magnifying glass over that area where guitars, bass, vox and synths tend to clash so much, and it really helps IMO. Also pretty cool for getting a close look at guitartones on your favourite albums. Probably not everyone's thing, but I think I'm going to leave it this way.

Good luck and have fun with your new purchase!

Brilliant monitor.

Get a graphic EQ! Theres some savage peaks at at like 2.6k and 3.14k. I think its around the crossover point.

Other than that I reckon they are near perfect!

Is it like listening to porn with a microscope? Every single moan of feigned pleasure projects a wretched image of a hopeless young woman taken into the endless vortex of hanging a price tag from her fleshy temple just to bring fifteen seconds of bitter pleasure to the overweight, lonely wanker a thousand miles away?

Or does everything just sound a bit more squishy and wobbly?

EDIT:
Now that I think about it, we need binaural porn!

I have to say before I sold mine and went the headphone direction I was very impressed with them although I did feel they lacked low end. But then again, I went from those to ath m50's so that could be the reason.

I thought I was going to kill myself when I heard those mids. Now I use the mid-boost.

They key with these that I've found is (big "no shit" coming up here), listening to them at a low, almost conversation volume. My mixes translate MUCH, MUCH better in the few weeks since I started using these.

That crazy midrange offers a clarity that I haven't experienced in my studio yet.

yes! i noticed everything sounds pretty damn good low. thanks for the tip. i ran some sine sweeps while watching the walking dead premiere to try and break these in a bit.

the krk's had a definite problem in the 100-200hz region and it was so fucking hard to hear what the hell was going on. i'm going through mixes i've been working on and i'm surprised how well they sound through these. I feel like I don't have to be scared of too much low end in my guitars.

Definitely neb! But these wil be my pair to take with me when I move out/ make a proper treated room! Either way, having them will be better than not having them at all :D
