I am really fucking depressed

who cares if the shit you're churning out now sucks?

just make sure that the next project is better.

and that the one after that is better.

and so on and so forth.

Worry not, I've been doing this for 8 years, and I still suck... but I suck just enough for people to not notice too much anymore lol

Recording and Mixing is a CONSTANT learning process, you will ALWAYS get better, and you will never be as good as you want to be.

I'm mixing a band right now and they suck so bad that this project sounds worse than my last project:waah: I'm feeling real depressed cause i can't for the life of me get this mix semi decent. There timing is so bad it makes your face cringe and the both the guitarist can barley hold the string down hard enough to play a note and the bassist must have had strings from 1970:Puke:

Someone mentioned before great players will make your mix come together 10x easier well I'm feeling that on this cause the players suck and my mix is 10x worse!!!!

I think I'm gonna have to turn away shitty bands for now on cause i hate turning out a crap cd that people will hear. But i got payed already so its a must on this one:zombie: Pray for me guys:notworthy

I think everyone learns this too. I'm really trying to work on my preproduction side of things so I can avoid things like this. Remember at least you are getting paid for it, and you have got the experience of doing bands like this too.

Get good sounds to tape/HDD if you can, use subtractive EQ, listen at lower volumes and please put a HP filter on guitars around 100, hell on everything at 40, except drums, that will alleviate some mud.

Gtrs LP at around 10k depending, but these aren't critiques on your work since I have no headphones here, just stuff I had to learn from my mistakes.

Good material doesn't hurt.

I've been sucking at music and recording for 15+ years, and lovin' every bit of it. Didn't make it my career though, just a way to pass some time and pretend I'm a ROCK GOD.

I learned that Quick , If the PLayers Suck......i tell them to hit the fucking door....And Yes i might have to eat frozen pizza's for that month....but its worth it , i cannot deal with shitty musicians no matter the money. It makes recording the worst thing in the world when the player cant play

i have the same sort of thing going on right now...i'm "producing" some stuff for a guy i work with and his friend, but they both totally suck

this guy wanted to record both the drums and guitars by himself for the songs...so we had a couple of sessions where we tracked some drums, and were going to OD the guitars later. of course he insisted on bringing his entire 9-piece kit(2 kicks, 2 snares, 5 toms + cymbals), and cramming the whole fucker into my 7x7 drum room. talk about a fucking nightmare to mic.

then, of course, his playing was totally off-time. he also couldn't perform the same song the same way twice...if he would do a 2nd/3rd take of a track, it would magically end up like 2 mins. longer than the previous one. so i explained to him later that his drum tracks were crap, and that there was no way guitars could be OD'd over them.

so then i sold him on just laying down guitars over some DFH drums. so he comes over, lays down some riffs...i figure out the tempo, and throw down some generic loops for him to record along to. well of course he can't play along with the tempo for shit...but i get creative, and chop up some measures to make sure that he at least starts and ends a given riff at the same time the drums do.

long story short, the entire project is a fucking disaster - a full-on trainwreck. BUT...they've already paid me some $$ in advance, and are buying me some gear to make up the rest, so i don't have much of a choice.

i have noticed, however, THAT TRULY SHITTY MUSICIANS TEND TO NOT EVEN NOTICE HOW SHITTY THEY ARE!!! i'm just going to give them their crap album, take my $$ and gear, and act like the whole thing never happened.

i have some files you can mix if you want just to play around with...but you have to tell me how exactly how to use the sneap ftp.....and its not death metal....it's christian metal but i wont send you the vocals...cause the singer for the band was locked up (go figure for a christian band ) at the time and the guitar player was singing....but anyways these files were created on a Mackie MDR 24/96 mtr and transfered BWF. so they are timestamped. if you want.

Thom Yorke from Radiohead has written three of my all-time favorite albums, has several multiplatinum albums and a handful of grammys, and yet to this day gets depressed over his writing and singing abilities.

My point is that many artists are never going to be completely happy with their work, there is no such thing as becoming a perfect engineer, but if you stick with it and don't get pretentious it's impossible not to improve greatly

It's been like an extra 9 months now and i really improved !! I used my ears and not mechanical things (like I HAVE to compress drums !).

I am going to 4 years of music production at SUNY Purchase, even tho i was accepted at berklee it's too expensive (and when the fucking french government takes 70% of hwta you make for other people's healthcare stuff gets really expensive)

Hey, sweet dude, Purchase is like 45 minutes south of me! It's a great area, I think you'll like it (though there are a lot of despicable artsy hippies there, but you gotta take the good with the bad)
