I bought a 5150 tonight.

Yeah, my Ampeg combo had similar no-/fading- sound issues a few years ago that a fresh pair of 6550s cleared up in a jiffy. Here's hoping that's all this is, and not, say, a cracked PCB or something.

Might the woofiness suggest that new preamp tubes wouldn't be a bad idea either, or is that just what 5150s tend to sound like in person (hence the existence of a clarity mod)? My first hand experience is limited to this unit and a few minutes with a 6505 combo a year ago.

I didn't notice your post until now, sorry about that. I'll get the songs posted somewhere else for you and then let you know. ...I have no idea why the Myspace player is crapping out with it's ability to let people download.

The head worked fine at the store the two days I tried it, but was priced so low I assumed it had problems.

First time I powered it up at home, no sound came out either channel unless I cranked both Pre and Post to 10, and even then it was no louder than leakage from a pair of headphones across the room.

Cycled it off and back on again. Full, normal volume for about a minute, but then it faded to about 1/3 of its initial volume.

Off and back on again. The volume stayed steady for 10+ minutes and the sound quality seemed okay on single notes, but chords sounded woofy and indistinct regardless of Pre Gain or eq settings, as if I had switched from the bridge pickup to the neck without realizing it. (Yes, I checked. )

I'd try testing the tubes first, but I had a similar issue with my marshall and it was a bad cap
either way probably not a big deal
