I bought my first country release in my life today....

driving my dads car back to L.A. I tossed in his cd's...no surprises there for me as I was raised on Sinatra, Crosby, Elvis and country. My dad had some great tunes on his cd's... Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, George Jones, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn even caught a CCR tune who can't appreciate some Garth Brooks :
"'Cause I've got friends in low places
Where the whiskey drowns
And the beer chases my blues away
And I'll be okay
I'm not big on social graces
Think I'll slip on down to the oasis
Oh, I've got friends in low places"

I don't know any "new country" which for me would be anything after 1980. The classic country stars will always hold a special place in my heart as the music gives me some great childhood memories!

I don't get Garth Brooks myself...to me he's like what Michael Jackson is to pop music or Aerosupply has become to hard rock. Just way too slick, soulless, predictable music. That's cool that you were raised on a variety of stuff, diversity is good.

When my dad could hear & still appreciate music, he listened exclusively to country. In my young kid days we had MANY long rides with Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, etc. on the radio. My mom (RIP) listened to Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis, Judy Garland, Perry Como, etc. Needless to say, when my dad drove, I liked the music better, even as a little kid.

I like a lot of CCR, I don't like the majority of Garth's stuff, although like KISS, he did put on a helluva show.

As for Bryant - OFF WITH HIS HEAD!

Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson transend any stereotype. They should
have a spot in any music collection. Them, Neil Young and The Band
are as far as I can go with country. But if you listen the stories
told in these new country songs, you can't help but be entertained.

Well I guess we males deserve that after all the bimbos we have posted in here throughout the years

But I really don't want that pic on my subconscious mind

I guess in the end country like all music is:

a) an acquired taste
b) something mostly enjoyed and understood by Americans only (because of cultural background)
c) as umbereable for some as tango is for me even being born in Argentina where is considered kind of emblematic.

I wonder what would come of mixing country and black metal? :zombie:

I've never been able to get into country on more than a superficial level, I DJ on a country station so I've kind of educated myself on what the modern artists are doing; overall it seems like the new stuff takes a lot from the John Cougar Mellencamp school of country influenced '80s pop, and some of that I like but it's not something I'm going to run out and buy. They can sure write some catchy songs though, the melodies tend to stick in your head for long periods of time!

Modern Country in many ways picked up where 80s hair metal left off, only a lot shittier - but the aesthetics are still there. If you put on a country music video from nowadays, lower the volume and put on some Ratt, you'd swear it was still 1988.

I don't care for country much when it comes to the singing. I do however, like some of the guitar playing. I really dig the chicken' pickin' and slide players out there.

I agree with you on this. I really don't like Rascal Flatts. As for new country I prefer, Tim McGraw, Alan Jackson, Trace Atkins, Rodney Atkins, and Josh Turner. I even like Kid Rock's "All Summer Long"

I can deal with some old country.
It's mostly folk anyway.
I was in the hospital recently and was able to get an old Hank Williams set on the radio and it really helped smooth me out.
Pop country is ass though.

This is basically how I feel,I would say I lean more towards the rockabilly style though if given a choice.But hey bud I'm pretty open minded so I too will give Rascal a spin.
