However, the dude has no receipt of where he bought it, and that probably means no guarantee as well.. so IF that thing comes in broken, or decides to stop working after 2 minutes after installing.. im fucked no?

such is the way with buying used gear... i'd make sure you test it before buying it... and if there isn't a way... MAKE ONE... or don't buy it.

if the person gives you shit for wanting to test it, then he's hiding something and its borked.
