Huh, the $680 doesn't sound that bad.
At the beginning of 2020, I decided to take better care of my teeth after not going to a dentist for 15+ years. Surprisingly they still look fine and white, but I knew that there was probably something horrible going on. I go to the dentist and they say I need 8-10 cavities filled but other than that I should be alright (lol). Two of the cavities are very bad and should be filled immediately. So i have the bad ones filled and all of a sudden its March/April and everything shuts down due to Covid-19. Dentists are not allowed to practice unless it's a severe emergency and most offices are closed indefinitely either way. "Glad i got that out of the way", I said.
I wake up one day and swish my tongue around my mouth. It feels like a small piece of food is stuck between my gum and my tooth. I try to no avail to dislodge it, and eventually grab a flashlight. I shine the light up through the tooth (this is one of the bad ones with the huge filling) and I can clearly see that the tooth is cracked around the entire perimeter very close to the gum line. What I was feeling with my tongue was the crack. A couple days go by and it starts to hurt like a MOTHERFUCKER. I have been trying to contact my dentist for emergency service and they aren't even calling back. I try for 4 days straight and eventually get someone at a third-party call center who says they'll hook me up with the dentist. Awesome. So they call me back and say "Sure, we can get you an appointment. The doctor is in a different state and they don't accept insurance.". Okay, so fuck that.
My wife starts calling around and if anyone even answers the phone, they say that they legally cannot accept a new patient. She calls a dentist we used to see about an hour from home and the lady shows some sympathy. Says she'll diagnose the problem but legally can't do any work. I go in, and she says that the dentist who filled the tooth was essentially guilty of malpractice. Long story shortened, she pretty much flicks the tooth and it just falls out of my mouth. She prescribes some antibiotics for the pain/infection (it helps) and they're able to do a root canal and build support for a permanent crown through 6 appointments and $2000 out of pocket (way more if you count what insurance covered). They could only do small amounts of work each time because they were unable to purchase PPE or any of the required supplies. It was fucking wild. Moral of the story: take care of your teeth and hope that they dont get fucked up during a national lock down.
