youtube is known to just have comments of people babbling on and fighting on purpose...hell i was watching a Chris Broderick video and someone said that he can't play guitar for shit...youtube is known for bullshit like that on just about any video you find. I'm going by the philosophical materialism, not the hijacked version that people mistake for commercialism. I'm not expecting full-on physicalism, but to take 'people wanting comfort and increased status' and turn it into 'mob mentality that completely avoids any sort of intellectual fulfillment, instead choosing to live in la-la land' is more of a twist than I put on it even if you're assuming his dictionary's definition.

i love hte fact that people like tipper gore try to take down metal/rock when they really should be turning there head to see the other side, but since its become so mainstream its becmoe accepted and noone thinks twice when they make a shitty rap song about bitches and hoes.

What the hell are you talking about? that's the same problem. The whole eastern philosophy has been the same thing. When you let materials own you, because the items show your "status." A material is something that doesn't think or care. "if I drive this expensive car chicks will dig me, and I'll get laid"
Wanting to live more comfortably and letting an item increase your status are to totally different things. For example we are soon to be in the age where everyone can live comfortably, but people who have things don't want other people to have things because that's what seperates them. "this is my jacket, I don't want anyone else to have it because it defines me." They are working on nano technology factories where anyone can put in a blue print, and the machines will take otherwise useless items, and turn it into something you want. But the people in power don't want this to happen, and are making sure it won't happen because that's what separates them from the masses.
People don't like micheal moore because he's an idiot and looks like big bird. The entire thing about banning things because of specific peoples wrong doings and trying to make people feel bad that had nothing to do with something is ridiculous. Hopefully someone kicks his ass. He's just a jew that needs a quick buck.
That wasn't the status I was talking about and I wasn't equating status with possessions, or vice versa - that's consumerism. Materialism just avoids the supernatural and spiritual... different sack of words entirely. I'm not disagreeing that people are buying into marketing bullshit entirely too much, but that's not a materialism issue - it's a consumerism-in-a-shallow-society issue.
