I suck at low end

it really probably is because of your room

it's almost impossible to know what's really going on below 200hz without a proper mix environment

Actually, I think im pretty good at lowend, but to be good at it, I always have to use my own recordings.
If I use any of that "mix my song"-stuff that gets posted here from time to time, I never get any really good results for some reason.

I agree. After having an acoustician look at my room and help treat it I was playing a guessing game. Now I know exactly what is going on and can hear the smallest details in EQ changes, reverb tails, etc.

80-90% of users on this board don't get the bass guitar right.
All are focusing on fat guitars and drums, at least that's what I have observed so far and it's my main problem too.
My trick for watching the lowend: doublecheck on good headphones, besides room treatment it gives you a different perspective and directly reveals muddy stuff.

until i have the opportunity to really tune my room i just really reference other mixes for low end response and get the best "revealed" idea of the low end on headphones and by constantly checking my mix in my home surround system and car.

i think even without real proper treatment you can have very conservative low end mixes and just be very frugal with stuff and don't take risks. keeping things safe and flat works well if a seasoned veteran is mastering everything. to get to andy wallace symphonic bass territory you really need a great room however and def a sub because those guys who always say "i can mix a record on auraltones" still cannot get into those areas without actually hearing what is going on. that is just the way i see it. basically keep it safe until you can afford to take risks. it's like don't try to get on the highway and go 120mph in and out of traffic until you have a 911 turbo and are an excellent driver. stay in the middle lane going 70 with the honda accord so to speak.

well i'm getting myself the matching sub for my KRKs in a few days because of this, i want to get the bottem end in my tracks real tight, and simply dont feel i can hear it enough to do so.

going out to metal bars with massive PA's + subs just sounds fat! and i want to be able to hear/feel the same shit in my bedroom when i'm mixing to make sure they'll sound just as fat.

so I'd recommend getting a sub so you can hear that little bit more info in the bottem end, although i've not yet mixed through one yet so i cant really say shit. i'm just hoping this will help me. i'll post up my experiances with it once i have got it lol

Yeah, I'm having a bit of trouble with the low end with my mixes, too, so I just CRANK THE FUCK OUT OF IT TO GET THAT BOOOM! YEAH BABY!

Just make sure you're using Nuendo and not ProTools. You don't want your mix squawking like a chicken. Oh, God love Tad. LOL
