Unfortunately, it will always be awkward telling people to play their instrument better. There's no way around it. No one likes hearing they aren't doing something well but if they are paying you to actually produce them and genuinely want their product to sound as good as possible then it has to be done. The thing is, you will eventually get to a point where you simply won't care if you are offended them, haha. You may piss them off for the moment but they will appreciate your honesty and drive to push them to be as good as possible. Going to a studio to record can be one of the most humbling experiences for a musician when they get told they aren't playing well. Especially if they are used to not being told. It's your job to get them the best product possible and staying on top of them to ensure a solid performance is just part of that.
I guess what I'm saying is you are the guy in charge and you have to own it. Your name is on the final product and the truth is, you could mix the best album you've ever done but if the performances are sloppy people will look past the great mix and blame you for that. That's just the way it is.
