i think we need an impulse tutorial...

I'd be way into it - and one thing I can contribute (despite how obvious it is) is a lesson I've just learned from making a supremely retarded mistake whilst using SiR for my convolution plugin - make sure the mix is set to 100% wet!! Because the plugin is primarily used, I assume, for reverb, when using it as an insert for that purpose you want a majority of the original signal mixed in, but not with cab impulses, naturally! Oy, live and learn...

i've messed around with impulses enough to figure out how they work, but probably not enough to write an entire tutorial on it...are there any takers out there?

i figured that with the # of how-to topics on here about the subject, that it would be as handy to have around as the other sticky'd threads

And especially given how many inquiries there are about how to use them - it's just a matter of someone else getting bit by the philanthropy bug and deciding to write one!

Hey WildHades, thanks a ton! KeFIR kicks ass compared to SiR, and I might just give creating my own impulses a try!

hi!
a question concerning the impulses:do you know what cabs and mikes are used in the guitar hack impulses? (beside sm57..i guess they were used when impulses are called "fredman")
do you know some other good guitar impulse databases?i´m searching for some retro orange/hiwatt/sovtek stuff!
thanks and bye,pat

GuitarHack's are Krank Rev Power Amp (100W 6L6, all JJ apart from the first he made called "Mesa Traditional...") + Mesa Traditional 4x12 V30s + SM57, iirc... don't know about the mic preamp.
I think "fredman" means just the particular position of the SM57, 45° pointing the center of the cone... I don't think that "fredman" impulses are made with 2 mics, but I could be wrong...

Better ask him...

I kind of like the fact that Guitarhacks impulses are all over the internet, and people haven't got a clue what he means. Make me feel... special. "I know why they're called Fredman, and I have the original ones, WITH the readme file." ;)

The only problem with it is that it seems like every kid on the internet ends up here asking how to use the fucking things. Lazy fucks. All you have to do at any time is scroll down two inches from the top thread at the most and you will find another identical thread stating "I'm really not dumb but how do I use these? Do they give me the distortion like I hear from people around here?"

It would be a fair question once in awhile if that information wasn't so unbelievably easy to find here.

Anyway, Here's a fucking tutorial.

1. Download Impulses.
2. Extract Impulses.
3. Download Convolution Software. "Oh...of course you want free. Silly me. :goggly: Then get Kefir, Boogex Or SIRv1."
4. Load Amp Sim In Your Host.
5. Load Convolution Software AFTER The Amp Sim In Your Host.
6. Load Impulse Into Convolution Software And Set To 100% Wet.
7. Plug In Your Guitar.
8. Turn On Software Monitoring In Your Host And Play Guitar.

I believe the reason we don't already have an elaborate tutorial on this is because it's so fucking simple it hurts.

Cheers.
