So here it is!

I am in a paradox of trying to figure out what would be the best route as far as sound in a practice room as well as on a stage (assuming the P.A. is in my hands and not the house).

I've read a few things, but it seems like the details are either too scientific and not practical, or it's just based on brand-name favortism. I'd like to know what kind of things I should actually be looking into.

For example: I read in a sweetwater catalog that for picking out power amps, you should get power amps that are at least 2x as powerful as your continuous program handling of your speakers as so the sound doesn't distort when a signal is pushed (i.e.-kick drum).

All I know is my bands P.A. is going tits-up, and since the technological end of things usually ends up in my hands, I want to know what routes to avoid and which routes to go towards without talking to a music store associate that has his favorites just because he gets commission for it.
