......and amps aren't allowed in dorms. My guitar teacher suggested trying to find a Zoom 9000 effect box, with which I could just plug in headphones to play with all the greatness of a normal amp.

I did a bit of looking around and I can't find it on ebay, so I decided to look up similar products and I came across the Line 6 PODxt, this thing looks like it can do practically anything, but it is a hefty price of about $500 Canadian.

What would recommend me for my situation? the POD or something completely different(if possible something $300 Canadian or less would be great) ? I like to play mainly black/death/doom metal. Thanks in advance!

what kind of prison school are you going to? i kept a marshall stack in my closet and i rocked out, nobody cared.

lucky you. Either way though I'm still interested in getting something like a POD or Zoom 9000, any recommendations?

there's something called Vamp by Behringer that might suit you, on the more expensive but higher quality end there's the PodXT and Boss GT6 or GT8

Is the Vamp any good?

what about a Toneworks Pandora? quite a bit cheaper than the POD XT.
I dont have any personal experience with those, but I've heard good things about it
I also heard it would sound great with a Marshall Microstack ;)

line 6 pod. its what I got hooked up to my computer. works fine.

Is that the original one or the XT?

and thanks to everyone for the suggestions, I have go check some out for myself.

Right now I'm thinking more along the lines of this: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=guitar/search/detail/base_pid/150320/c_lv=1/

The reviews on Harmony Central and Musicians Friend both seem favourable, especially considering the price. Also the video and sound samples as provided on the Korg website all sounded great to my ears, unlike the V-amp 2.

I would prefer a PODxt but its a bit out of my price range at around $500 Canadian, and all I really want it for is to practice and perhaps record some stuff on my pc, and the Ampworks does both of those as well.

Check this sample I recorded with a v-amp and decide for yourself

POD is better in some things. The compressor is much better, the noise reduction is much better, it's more versatile, has a ton more cab/amp simulations (half of them you'll hardly ever use, unless you mix it with other racks/effects and such)

For metal stuff and for demoing at home, I think v-amp is just awesome. It's got a much more fat/thicker distortion than any of PODs/Line6 stuff.
