Do it by ear? Airdrumming always helps me

Airdrumming will help. It's a lot of work to make fake cymbals sound good. I had to audience every single hit to make it realistic and I still don't like the result. I don't bother with them anymore. Get a set of cymbals and mic them. Mix with programmed drums.
