What are they?
Im lovin that tone of that days turn blue to gray machine head cover in the mix section, and then everyone started talking about impluses
is it like cab simulation for the pod or something, and if so how do you use it? :u-huh:

search is your friend....there's loads of threads on this here.

In context for here, when people are talking about impulses it's usually in regards to speaker cabs where someone has captured how sound is "effected" by a mic'ed cab.....poorly explained, but I'm trying :D....it's bloody easy to use them but tough to explain.

In simple practice you're supposed to be able to play a amp or POD without their corresponding speaker cabs (or cab sims), slap on the impulse response for a cabinet and have it sound like the real thing (or a "super-POD"). It's a practical way of getting the sound of a rockin'ly loud cab if you don't have the means of doing so for whatever reason (neighbours, gear, etc). It's great for POD's and a good impulse will sound better than the cab sims on the POD itself. Some of the guys here share their impulses (Splat88, Kazrog, Keiffer, etc) and they are excellent for that purpose.

This "sound" of the cab is usually captured via running a test-tone through the cabinet and then recording that (via a mic of choice) into wav format. Then you can load that into a plugin such as SIR or Pristine Space. Slap that puppy on the un-cabbed amp or POD tone with the cab sim turned off, and it's rock time!

Impulses can also be used to recreate acoustic spaces, just like reverbs. It's just not a digital representation of a space, but the sound of the "actual" space. I saw some muppet capture the sound of his mouth the other day....by setting off a starter's pistol in it!

I understand what they are....I understand kinda how they are made...I understand that they are cool...but I don't understand how to make them work with good results.

I would like to ask how most of you do this, maybe step by step if you will, and explain exactly how you are getting this monster tone with the IR's because I keep getting sub-par Line6 sounding shite. Even while using several amps and distortion boxes...so I'd like to believe it's how I'm running my IR's (through Pristine Space). Screenshots too?

thanks a lot man
everything in the entire world finally makes sense!

Am fairly certain someone else has posted screenshots from Pristine Space before. Search "impulse" and you'll get a ream of stuff to look at.

In terms of getting a good tone, it's much like trying to get a good tone from a normal amp or POD, you need to keep tweaking until you find something you like. Keiffer hosts 100+ impulses of different cabs that folks from here have posted. Some work better for me than others, but the normal variables of technique, strings, guitars, amp (or POD) settings, etc all still apply.

I've been contemplating trying my krankenstein head with Altiverb on my mac but the $600.00 price tag is putting me off & making me say "F THAT!".
Right now for a DI box, all I have is the Ultra G which sends the signal through the cab while it's going directly in. If I had a Radial DI would it block the signal going to the cab even though the head is connected to it through the DI and still send the signal direct in?
If so, would I be able to crank the head to get that tube saturation?
If so, would I have problems with controlling input levels in my host?

Edit - Sorry for the slight hi-jack.

Radd, if you're wanting to track the amp output without a cab, you'll need a dummy load like a Hot Plate, which has an adjustable line out.

Me? lol. It's great until I record it being that I can't crank it in my apartment.
I've looked into attenuaters, iso cabs, amp sims & convolution reverbs and nothing strongly appeals to me in the end when considering quality & cost.
I'm on a mac and Altiverb is $600 :Puke:
Even $300 is a bit more than I care for for a CR or AS. :bah:
I like tha Randall iso cab idea but I'll have to buy a new mic for it and do quite a bit of processing (which I might kinda suck at) to get a descent tone, not a great tone, plus it'll take up more room than I have almost.

I don't know what to do. I just e-mailed krank about removing tubes so I'll see what happens with that. Not expecting a cure though.
I'm thinking of just biting the bullet and using my GT-8 until I get a house which may or may not be this year. :erk:
I get descent tones from the GT-8 but the fizz thing that sounds god awful, I just can't get rid of. Low passing sounds like crap. Maybe my LP filter sucks. (Apple's 2 band LPF)
I don't know. Whatever. lol.
Thanks for asking though.

Actually, I have an Ampeg SS-150 (solid state if you haven't guessed) head
that's been out of commission for a few years and hopefully is fixed now. Finally took it in for repair. I'll probably use that. I shouldn't have any problems micing that at low levels. At least I didn't in my analog portastudio days.

Not for mac under $300 that I know of. I tried the free "Convolver" but that was to cpu intensive and made my system crackle. That's another thing, my ram is maxed and my hard drive capacity is low.
Glad you like your Revolution. You aught to with the monster tones I've heard from you. lol.

Thanks guys.
Brett - I'm installing demos now. Looks like I would have to buy Pluggo which includes over 100 plug-ins for $200 in order for TConvolution to run but since that's free, if it's any good and my mac can handle it all, it seems like $200 would be deal. We shall see...
Damn it! I still would have to buy a friggin dummy load to crank it.
Oh well, if that's what I'll have to do. I should probably get a hotplate or weber mass anyway.

On a side note, I picked up my SS-150 today and it seems to be working fine now and DAMN it sounds good! Its been so long since I could really play it.
He had it hooked up to crate 4x12 w/celestion v30's. (at least thats what he said they were) I tried a Dean razorback fresh out of the box and IT WAS NICE! Very lightweight too. I thought mahogany was a heavy wood.

Well, I followed the installation instructions and it seems that Tconvolution is either not compatible with DP or maybe I need to buy the max/msp plug-in which costs $500; which aint gonna happen. Whatever the deal is, it's not loading into DP. Hopefully they'll fix this issue in the near future.
Thanks anyway Brett.
Look out solid state, here I come.
